today was the inaugural utah marathon/half marathon/5k/fittest state festival. i ran both the half marathon and the 5k because i wanted to see if i would like the 5k more if i eased into it with a more enjoyable distance.
the plan for the half was to stay with devra until she inevitably dropped me, and today that only took one mile. there was another woman right behind us and she easily passed me when i fell off devra's pace. i watched them run up the giant hill on 900 south and eventually fade into the distance. shoot. even james grew tired of my slow pace and dropped me around the 4 mile mark. it was a solo effort from there and i just tried to hold steady and hang on to my third place position. the course was challenging but i really enjoyed it. it was a nice loop through a lot of cool areas in SLC (u of u campus, the avenues, state capitol and of course sunnyside).
i had 20 minutes and 26 seconds to regroup after the half marathon before lining up for the 5k. i switched out my bib#, put on a fresh pair of power gloves, and ate a stale (or maybe frozen) shot blok. my plan for the 5k was to stick with andrea. her goal was sub-25 (although i knew she would run faster). i dragged behind her and kevin for most of the race, complaining and blacking out while they laughed about how nice it was to jog a 5k. i was not experiencing that same jogging joy. i mustered up a little bit of speed at the end, but only because the course went downhill. andrea and i both finished in 20:55, but i ended up with the blue ribbon on my medal because it matched my shoes.
overall, the double-header at the festival was a success. as far as i can tell, i didn't do any damage and i'm feeling good post-races. the two highlights of the morning: 1) devra emerging from the awards tent with a giant handful of medals; 2) andrea running a 5k! watch out, she's coming back!
