last day off -- will try running again tomorrow. 

i started having some minor lower back pain/tightness [right side] sometime last week (maybe thursday or friday). it didn't hurt to run (although i did have to gingerly limp through the first 5-10 strides to get going), and it would get really tight after i stopped running. on monday and tuesday of last week, i could still run, but it was bothering me throughout -- enough tightntess to put a hitch in my stride, which started causing pain and problems elsewhere (IT band, knee, adductors). 

by tuesday night, i was having trouble walking without pain, and it started hurting a lot when sleeping (turning over and shifting). i was out on a walk with james on tuesday night (specifically, we were walking to the cookie shop lol), and the whole area spazzed out in pain. this is when i {james} decided that i should try taking a few days off to see if that would help. 

btw, this issue did not come on because of running (at least i don't think so). the problem definitely seems to be stemming from work-related activities, but i had to figure out if running was making it worse, better, or neutral. 

after five full days off, it feels the same. no better, no worse. foam rolling and tennis-balling do nothing for it, and i can't push into any specific spot that produces pain. so more than likely i've done the classic old lady move of "throwing my back out". in that case, i'm just going to have to wait it out and watch some old safety videos on how to lift and carry things properly.

the pain originates at the X -- this hurts pretty much all the time when walking around or when i shift while sleeping. the red grafitti shows where tightness and pain radiate when i'm running. my left big toe is also tagged, because in the last week, the bottom of it has gone completely numb and i don't know what that is about. but it's kind of interesting and maybe i'm about to die. 

i'm running a marathon in 7 weeks, so i might have to get legitimately aggressive with a back brace and a cane.

one green lake loop, slow. (i started out as a barely-trot and moved up to a jog).

i stopped at the green lake outdoor exercise & acrobat gym and hung from the bar to try and decompress my spine. it didn't seem to do much, but maybe with regular visits it will be helpful.

problem area was fairly tight while running, but overall i felt okay. stopping at lights/crosswalks is the worst part -- the first few strides getting back into it are very hitched with pain that gradually subsides as i get into a fuller stride and straighten out my posture. 

some good news from this part of the usa -- smoked has cleared, sun is out, temperatures are fall-like, and our neighbors finished their jackhammer project.

off again.

ran around the block. was very limpy, and "just getting through it" for the third day in a row seemed like a bad idea.

i also ate bbq chips 2day so things are going well and i'm getting ultra fit.

two loops around green lake.

i felt a lot better this morning than i have in nearly two weeks. even last night i was feeling like i hadn't made any progress at all, but by this morning i felt like the tightness had gone down a notch and my range of movement without pain went up two notches. 

maybe i finally slept right. :) i've also been icing 3x/day, inbuprofening 2x/day, and doing various lumbar extension exercises.
