my goal today was to beat my draper days time.

my alarm went off at 5:35am and i pressed snooze. it went off again at 5:40am and i pressed snooze again. it went off again at 5:45am and this time i pressed dismiss. i still went back to sleep but james turned on the light and started making a lot of noise stirring gatorade powder in a glass cup, so i got up at 5:48am.

i didn't have time for any breakfast, so i grabbed a bottle of water out of the fridge. it's a 20 ounce bottle but it only had about 17 ounces total. it would have to do. i spent about seven minutes trying to put my hair into a top bun, but it kept falling out and i was getting frustrated because my hair elastics are so worn out and therefore too elasticy to keep my hair in place. i settled for my regular back bun which didn't look as good, but at this point i didn't have any more time to fuss around.

we left the house at 6:13am and it was still very dark. mysteriously, mrs. landlord was already awake and was standing in her garage with all the lights on. she was all dressed up in a black and white pants suit and there were at least three cars in the driveway. we were able to get away without her seeing us, but it's impossible that she didn't hear the car. so now she knows we are gone and she's in her garage in a pants suit? ok.

on the way to the race, i accidentally ran a stop sign. luckily there were no other cars on the road, but james reminded me that i needed to be more careful. we were cruising along juniper street when suddenly the entire road was barricaded and completely closed off. there was a crane in the middle of it, so i assume they were doing construction. it made me a bit cranky but luckily we didn't have to stop and wait for a train like has happened in the past.

as we got closer to the race, we started thinking about places to park. it was $7.00 to park at the world of coca cola and i didn't have any cash on me. also, i didn't want to pay $7.00. we ended up finding a free spot near georgia tech. i put a card, a pen, and my water bottle into the glove box before locking it up.

james stepped out of the car and said "uh oh." i assumed this meant that he was about to faint and/or had an issue with his scabbed knee. i asked him what was wrong and he said "it is hot." he left is shirt in the car while i kept mine on.

we jogged up to the start area and picked up our bibs. i accidentally grabbed five safety pins instead of the standard four, and the woman running the registration table saw me do it. she didn't say anything, but i could feel her eyes on me and she didn't take them off until she saw that i put one back.

i spent about two minutes putting on my bib. james put his on in about one minute, but his was slightly crooked. i didn't tell him at the time because he seemed really focused, so i waited until after the race and then passive aggressively slipped it in. "i can't tell if your bib is crooked or not" [sideways head] {squint eyes}. "i mean, it's not a problem or anything, it just looks a little bit crooked to me."

we ran a two mile warm up on the course in the reverse direction. we watched as the red atlanta track club truck went by putting out the cones. the guy dropping the cones was wearing a green vest and his eyes were puffy/tired, but not too bad. we got back to the starting area and i had to go adjust my back bun because it had fallen out during the warm up. it was way too humid to deal with wet hair hitting my neck while racing, so it was a priority to adjust it and make sure the bun would hold throughout the race.

i found james again and he was desperately searching for a course map because they moved the start line up slightly. he wanted to see how that would adjust the finish. i told him it would probably adjust the finish by the same amount that the start was adjusted (a very small distance), but he still wanted to see the map so he could mentally prepare and visualize himself at the finish. we searched around but still couldn't find a map, so eventaully we gave up on that and headed up to the starting line.

i got a spot about three rows back and then heard the announcement that the race would start in seven minutes. that was a long time to stand around, but i didn't feel like doing strides or jogging, so i continued to stand around for the entire seven minutes. i folded my arms a couple of times but they kept sticking together because of the humidity. they played the national anthem (orchestra, not live) and then gave some brief instructions on how to run and where to turn.

the gun went off. and so did we! lol.
