pre-race: drove up to logan yesterday afternoon and enjoyed a fun pre-race BBQ at scott's house with the logan bloggers and the kennards. it was a fun evening. delicious watermelon included. stayed at my friend kelsey's house in smithfield. did not sleep well at all.
splits - 6:23, 6:23, 6:33, 6:05, 6:08, 6:17, 6:19, 6:26, 5:59, 5:28 for (.32)
drove to the start with nan and scott. after picking up our bibs, we had about 5 minutes to warm up. i warmed up for 2, then ducked into the long porta-potty line of death in hopes that somehow i would get through it before the start. i spotted two lonely gray ones off to the side with only two people in line, so i jumped into that one and thank goodness the folks were moving through quickly. made it to the start line with a minute to spare. phew.
race: chilly at the start, but it warmed up nicely and the morning was beautiful. the first 6.5 miles down the canyon felt great and the miles were going by quickly. i felt relaxed and in control. this is probably the best i have felt in a race since last summer.
hill just before mile 8. not too painful, but it was definitely a hill. i was working hard and my legs and lungs were tired at the top. i let up on the pace just a bit to recover but then sped up again when i realized i was cutting it close on my sub-60 goal.
the last mile has some good downhill, and it ended up being my fastest at 5:59. finished in 58:25. PR & met my goal of keeping it under 1 hour. overall i am happy with the race and i felt strong today.
short cool down with nan and ruth. stuck around for the awards and the raffle. there may have been some fruit hoarding somewhere in there. nan was kind enough to drive dave and i back up the canyon to our cars. thanks nan (& kids). and kudos to abe for remembering where the van was parked. drove back to slc and ate the biggest lunch ever known to man.
results are HERE and a nice article about the race is HERE. congrats to paul and nan!
