12.5 miles. JAJAF sunday run. we ran along the slc half marathon course to check out the route. i wasn't really sore this morning, but i felt pretty tight and low on energy. i was fine up through 10 miles but started crashing after that. luckily the only thing left was the long, slow climb to the top of state street. the finish will be great this year though -- a very nice downhill grade for the final half mile. no turns. no cobblestones. i just hope i get my energy back by then.

thanks to jake and andrea for setting up the run and the shuttling of cars. it was a fun morning with perfect weather (my only complaint being that jake didn't dress up like a giant bunny).

happy easter.

PM run + track workout. whaaaaaaaat?

yes, andrea convinced me to join her in a track workout this afternoon. i haven't done anything on the track in a very long time. i slowly phased it out of my training over time, partly due to my work schedule and partly because i am a wuss and full of excuses. i have never been able to get myself to go back until today -- the day full of cold wind and rain...

it actually turned out to be very pleasant for the actual workout. we warmed up around sugarhouse park just as the rain was dying down, and once we got to the track it had pretty much cleared up. the sun even started shining by the time we were cooling down.

the workout: 3 x (400m-200m-200m) with 200m recovery. this was a perfect little workout to ease back into track running and remind my body what it's all about. i stayed with andrea (barely) for the first set, and then i slowly started dropping back. by the final set, she was finishing her 200's before i had even started mine :)

my issue was the recovery portion -- i wasn't getting my breathing even a little bit under control before the next repeat, so each one became more difficult and sloppy than the last. i finally just started taking a bit more time on the recovery portions and was able to finish out the workout with a strong final 200m. the 400's ranged from 83-90 and the 200's 40-44. something like that. i'll have to see what andrea's splits were -- my timex seems to have had a lot of difficulties separating the splits and recovery periods. i think i was pushing the wrong button. i'm not used to taking splits so often!

in sum: this felt harder than it should have and was a nice reminder that i am out of shape. however, it was good to get back to the track. i know i need to do this more, it's just a matter making time and putting in the effort to do it. i know it will help. i like how it makes you feel terrible, but at the same time you feel good and alive.

run for relief 5k this morning, put on by the christ united methodist church in millcreek. it was a tough course, but not that tough. i'm not sure what is going on but i'm definitely out of the fitness groove. this is my third 5k this year and i keep getting slower.

the race started with a short trip around the block -- uphill, relief, downhill, then back up the same hill. it then gradually climbed up 2700 south toward tanner park. from there it dropped back downhill for a good while. it was a nice stretch to get the turnover going and get my breathing back under control. the final mile had a few turns with some gradual uphills, but nothing too crazy. i knew by mile two that i wouldn't break 20, and i found that annoying because i was running as fast as i could.

we ran the course before the race and it reminded me a lot of the cottonwood heights 5k. that is when i made the goal to break 20, thinking that would be a decent time. the fact that i wasn't even close worries me a bit. i don't know -- something is off.

despite the "death to me" element of the race, it was a lot of fun. very low key and friendly. i cooled down with james and markP and then we headed inside the church, where they were very generously giving away thousands of frozen burritos and car air fresheners (this is absolutely true).

i'll have to see what happens next week at SLC, but i'm not very confident about anything right now.

planning to spend the rest of the day working on the "cutting james' hair" project.
