PM run + track workout. whaaaaaaaat?
yes, andrea convinced me to join her in a track workout this afternoon. i haven't done anything on the track in a very long time. i slowly phased it out of my training over time, partly due to my work schedule and partly because i am a wuss and full of excuses. i have never been able to get myself to go back until today -- the day full of cold wind and rain...
it actually turned out to be very pleasant for the actual workout. we warmed up around sugarhouse park just as the rain was dying down, and once we got to the track it had pretty much cleared up. the sun even started shining by the time we were cooling down.
the workout: 3 x (400m-200m-200m) with 200m recovery. this was a perfect little workout to ease back into track running and remind my body what it's all about. i stayed with andrea (barely) for the first set, and then i slowly started dropping back. by the final set, she was finishing her 200's before i had even started mine :)
my issue was the recovery portion -- i wasn't getting my breathing even a little bit under control before the next repeat, so each one became more difficult and sloppy than the last. i finally just started taking a bit more time on the recovery portions and was able to finish out the workout with a strong final 200m. the 400's ranged from 83-90 and the 200's 40-44. something like that. i'll have to see what andrea's splits were -- my timex seems to have had a lot of difficulties separating the splits and recovery periods. i think i was pushing the wrong button. i'm not used to taking splits so often!
in sum: this felt harder than it should have and was a nice reminder that i am out of shape. however, it was good to get back to the track. i know i need to do this more, it's just a matter making time and putting in the effort to do it. i know it will help. i like how it makes you feel terrible, but at the same time you feel good and alive.
