AM: 6 miles. chocolate factory loop.

PM: 3 miles around liberty park. weighted vest experiment #1.

5 pounds / average pace = 7:49 / average HR = 141 bpm

target pace is 8:00/mile, so this was a little too fast. average HR without weight at 8:00 pace = 129 bpm. more to come...

PM2: fieldhouse workout. weights, core, heel/toe walking, wall sits, plank, etc.

8 miles. emigration market loop.

i've been debating between striders 1/2 and the SLC 10-miler this weekend. i'm leaning more towards the 10-miler at this point for a number of reasons, but that would mean missing the first circuit race. tough decision...

i'm also signed up for the SLC half marathon. it looks like they are actually getting it together and the race will be legit. they are forking out a bunch of prize money, so it could potentially be a very competitive race. i don't think the new race management would be giving out prize money if they weren't going to do it right -- everyone knows the reputation of this race, and they wouldn't have taken it over only to continue to drive it into the ground. at least we can hope this is the case...

am: 6 miles. westminster loop. cool moon this morning -- it looked like a giant version of one of those gold leprechaun coins that is filled with chocolate and melts in the warmer-than-average spring sun and you tote it around in your car until james finds it and eats it for dinner.

pm edit: did not get registered for the slc 10-miler.  i prematurely blogged my fate for saturday, but it turns out i can't actually get into the race. registration closed for good on wednesday evening and there is no day-of-race registration. so...striders it is!

splits: 6:17, 6:16, 6:18, 6:05, 6:21, 6:20, 6:27, 6:28, 6:42 (wobble), 6:27, 6:35 (weave), 6:39, 6:27, 0:34 (.1).

beautiful weather this morning -- a striders miracle. the skies were crystal clear and there was a slight breeze in the form of a tailwind. even though it was very cold at the starting line, the sunshine was abundant and it warmed up nicely. i was toasty warm after the first mile.

warmed up with devra and james. found tara at the starting line, which is always a delight. after some brief instructions from the race director, we were off.

my plan for this race was to to run a hard, honest effort but not overdo it. i'm planning on overdoing it at salt lake city half in two weeks, so today was more of a fitness test. i plugged 1:24:00 into the course tool last night to analyze what kind of splits i would have to run and it seemed reasonable. i decided i would go for that time, and...ta da! (kind of bummed i didn't break 1:24 though; i tried). it was the final 5k that got to me..i basically went up in flames after a short hill in mile 9 and never recovered.

i came in second behind devra (she ran a 1:20:xx, which is an incredible time for this course). cooled down with devra, james, tara, and markP after the race. i really enjoyed this today. ever since 2009, this race has always had a black cloud and a big red "x" over it in my mind. i never wanted to return. i'm glad i gave it another chance today -- it's a beautiful course when you aren't blinded by blowing snow. the best part of the day is that i came home with just enough cash to buy dinner for two at chanon thai.
