beautiful weather this morning -- a striders miracle. the skies were crystal clear and there was a slight breeze in the form of a tailwind. even though it was very cold at the starting line, the sunshine was abundant and it warmed up nicely. i was toasty warm after the first mile.
warmed up with devra and james. found tara at the starting line, which is always a delight. after some brief instructions from the race director, we were off.
my plan for this race was to to run a hard, honest effort but not overdo it. i'm planning on overdoing it at salt lake city half in two weeks, so today was more of a fitness test. i plugged 1:24:00 into the course tool last night to analyze what kind of splits i would have to run and it seemed reasonable. i decided i would go for that time, and...ta da! (kind of bummed i didn't break 1:24 though; i tried). it was the final 5k that got to me..i basically went up in flames after a short hill in mile 9 and never recovered.
i came in second behind devra (she ran a 1:20:xx, which is an incredible time for this course). cooled down with devra, james, tara, and markP after the race. i really enjoyed this today. ever since 2009, this race has always had a black cloud and a big red "x" over it in my mind. i never wanted to return. i'm glad i gave it another chance today -- it's a beautiful course when you aren't blinded by blowing snow. the best part of the day is that i came home with just enough cash to buy dinner for two at chanon thai.
