6 miles. 3 loops around sugarhouse park. i ran into james about a 1/2 mile into the run. it was so nice to have the company -- i got out later than usual and was feeling very sluggish and unmotivated at first. i wore my five fingers for the first time in forever since i knew the run would be relatively short and i would have access to plenty of grass. the weather is unbelievably awesome.

15 miles with emily (emruns) and james (fiddy). another saturday run with great company. it was a beautiful morning to be out. we ran an out and back route along the jordan river parkway. overall the run felt really good, but i was definitely tired at the end. 7:06 average pace -- thanks to emily and james for keeping a good pace. i am sure i would have been a slacker today if i ran on my own. great run!

congrats to all the SGM runners today. i am anxious to see the results and hear about all of your races...

it was nice out this morning -- no rain just yet. i felt great from start to finish, which is unusual. it usually takes me a good 3-4 miles to wake up. i'll attribute it to the extraordinary amount of sleep i received last night.

5.000.000.003.008.00

this morning i was out to break 18 in the 5k. i thought it was realistic given last month's 18:24 with multiple stops and wrong turns. i really thought the fitness was there, but i was way off...

i picked up james at 4:50 am. there is no better time to be awake, especially if you are driving. no cars. no stress. quiet. we made it to layton in good time. we drove past the large parking lot with large cones and orange-vested volunteers only once before we realized it was in fact the place we were looking for. we pulled into the lot mud/weed/pothole field and i was immediately reminded of striders half '09 -- aka the mudfest.

we went to pick up our bibs and then went back to my car for a bit to stay warm before james had to warm up (he was running the half). james was having some sort of allergic reaction that caused his lips to start swelling up. he knew he could combat the swelling with a claritin, so we decided to venture off to the store to buy some. we i accidentally drove into a ditch on the way out of the parking lot. i blame the volunteers for not being there to shine their lights on the hazard. okay, i blame myself for not following the road and for trying to drive over the curb in a jeep that i apparently don't know how to operate. we got stuck, but only briefly (we were in a jeep, after all), and then i intelligently kept going forward instead of backing up and finding a different way out of the lot. so yes, the back wheels went through the ditch as well. we heard big, terrible sounds that you should never hear in a car. thumps and bumps. we finally made it to the road and immediately had to pull over because i thought my front tire was flat. it turns out it was fine. good. however, i am now planning that my wheel will fall off on my way in to work on monday morning.

we found claritin at our first stop -- a gas station! perfect. we then made our way back to the start line and ran a big square around the park to warm up. james lined up for the half, which started at 7:00, and i went back to my car to be lazy and stay warm.

just after 7:30, i met up with my dad and sister who were also running the 5k. i jogged a bit more with them and then made a visit to the POPs for the second time. then i continued jogging around the start area to try and stay warm. somewhere along the way i misplaced my gloves, and my hands were freezing. just after 7:45, they told us to line up for start. five-four-three-two one...someone said "go!" and i went out fast. all alone. no one else was there. no one.

i ran alone the entire race. all alone. it was like i was out on a morning run by myself, except it was much more painful than usual. it was an out-and-back  course, and it was honest. there were very slight grades along the way, but for the most part it was flat. no significant uphill or downhill in this one.

the first mile marker was actually at 1.2. i noted my 7:10 split. i was mad. i knew i was putting in more effort than that, so i figured it had to be off. even so, i realized that just by the way i was feeling at this point in the race, i was off my goal of sub-18 and would never recover. i reached the turnaround at 9:19. no hope.

i was discouraged. it was a lame effort wheeze-fest all the way back to the finish line. my spirits were lifted briefly when i saw my dad. he was in second place.  cool. about 1/2 mile later i saw my sister (she was a bandit). they were both running well and looked like they were having fun. i wished i could just relax and have fun as well, but i was frustrated that i could not find a way to generate more energy or motivation to speed up and give more effort. i was waning and didn't care. okay, i did care, but i wasn't doing anything about it.

my watch hit the 17:00 mark and  i still had .3 to go. not happy. about 50 yards from the finish, the first 10k runner sprinted past me and i was startled. another human! i crossed the line in 18:48 (according to my watch). slowest 5k since may of this year. i am not sure what happened, but i obviously am not doing as well as i thought post TOU.

i ran back along the course to find my dad and run with him to the finish. we started chatting, but then i looked back and realized that there was another guy coming up on him, so i told him he should probably push it a bit. he really picked it up here and finished with a strong kick, winning the overall male race. i was very happy for him.

after all the 5k fun, i waited for james to come in from the half. he did well today, especially considering his ailments. at the awards ceremony, they announced my official time as 19:06. i always take my official time over my watch time, but 18 seconds is way too big of a difference to be accurate. i am not convinced that the 19:06 is correct. i talked to the timing guy afterward and he confirmed that the official results clocked me at 19:06. he also mentioned that if you stand too close to the mats before the start, your chip will activate and start timing you. there is no evidence that this did or did not happen, but i will just assume that it did because i cannot imagine how the two times could be off by so much. there is not a lot of human error that can occur with a simple stopwatch. start. stop. then again, maybe i should just go with the 19:06. but that would only add salt to the wound.

needless to say, i am still frustrated with this distance. but i probably wouldn't be frustrated if i would have been realistic in the first place. i do not train properly for shorter distances. i don't put it the time or effort to get faster for the 5k, so i don't know why i expect that i should just magically break 18 minutes when i never do any speed work. i think it's time for me to stop being lazy.

10 miles. same route as yesterday (millcreek), but slower. 7:54 average pace.

grrrrr. i overslept this morning. i really, really hate it when i do that. it's never fun to wake up and immediately be thrown into a stressful, adrenaline-pumping situation.  i woke up with exactly nine minutes to be ready and out the door on time -- a tough task to accomplish when you are still trying to wake up. i didn't know where to start, so i was doing everything at random. one shoe on, shove breakfast in my mouth, brush my teeth while putting the other shoe on, etc. gah! nightmare. the good news is that i made it to work on time, but my head was fuzzy for a good two hours (in more ways than one).

so...today was a PM run. i usually don't like to run in the afternoon/evening because my stomach always protests, but today it actually cooperated quite well (not perfect, but it did behave for the most part). the best part was the weather. wow! what a great day to be outside. maybe it is a good thing that i missed out on my cold morning slog through the dark, because the day was perfect. i actually enjoyed a PM run. maybe i should sleep in more often.

it was really warm out this morning and my legs felt great. that is why i extended my route. it was just so was nice to run in daylight and be in the warm sunshine. glad it's the weekend.

FYI: the magic drinking fountain on this route has been shut off, but they are still watering the sidewalks and dead sunflowers on 3300 south. i am calling the mayor.

FYI 2: nan is amazing! congrats to her on her awesome race today in baltimore  -- 2:35:49 and an "A" standard olympic trials qualifier. brilliant!

also, a big congrats to jun, scott and maurine on their ultras!

8 miles easy. sunnyside up.

best of luck to all those running in the state cross country meet today @ sugarhouse park. the weather should be great. i am excited to go and watch the races unfold, as it will bring back many wonderful memories for me. it was six years ago that i ran in my first and only state cross country meet (dang, i'm getting old). it was my first real experience with competitive distance running, and it changed my life (i'm not being dramatic; i'm serious, it changed my life). i was fortunate enough to have an amazing coach named nan, who not only inspired me to want to be a better runner, but a better person as well. six years later and she is still providing that inspiration for me and many others as well. awesome.

ps: go susannah!

AM - 8 miles sunnyside up. no watch (i never time this run because it is always in the dark and always slow)

PM - 8 miles millcreek out-and-back. 8:20 average out, 7:43 average back. the run was uneventful except for one minor incident. i passed a big group of jr. high kids standing on the sidewalk in a big circle. right when i went past them, a girl jumped out at me and screamed "waaaaaah!" this definitely caught me by surprise. i have no idea what her intention was, but it was terribly funny.

i had a few unexpected projects come up at work yesterday, and i ended up working six hours later than planned. the day just slipped away from me. i guess it's my fault for not getting up and running beforehand -- sleep is just too enticing sometimes. there was a time in my life when i thought a goose egg would kill me. miraculously, i am still alive.

8 miles on the provo river trail with catherine (and eric for the first half), melody and michelle. i was worried about the rain, but luckily it held off and the morning was actually very nice temperature-wise. the fall colors were out in full force and the scenery was beautiful -- i'm glad i could enjoy it with such great company. fun times.

following the run, i went to breakfast with my mom -- the perfect way to top off the morning. great start to the weekend!

it was cold, but not terrible (other than my cold hands). the mountains look really pretty right now with the orange and red colors peeking through the dusting of snow. soon enough (as in this afternoon), fall will be covered up completely. :(

paced the 2:05 group at the provo halloween half this morning. this was my first pacing experience, and i found out that i am not very good at it. it didn't help that the mile markers were sporadic and the course may have been .2 to .3 miles short.  there were very few people who stayed with me the whole time. most of them ended up falling back, but i was happy to see a few surge ahead and try and hit a time closer to 2:00. i ended up coming in at 2:02:40 and i felt bad for failing as a pacer. but i figure if the course really was a bit short, i would have come in pretty close to the target time of 2:04:50. ah well, it was fun. different experience, but fun.

the line for the buses to get from the finish at riverwoods to our cars at university mall was unbelievably long. i ended up just running back to my car, which gave me a few more miles and probably saved me a good hour or two on my day.

it was great to see/meet so many bloggers and friends this morning, but otherwise i am not sure this will be an annual event for me. the 4 am - 1 pm time commitment on a saturday was a bit more than i had planned for.
