october! one of my favorite months.

finally solved a puzzle i have been working on for awhile. see if you can figure it out:

http://www.allflashgames.net/picturedifference.html

no running today. and it's not because i couldn't, i just felt like a bike ride so i did that instead.

SUPER-cold hands this morning...and i was even wearing my magic moisture-wick mizuno gloves. guess it's time to invest in some new ones. overall a pleasant morning, but the achy hands were a big distraction. i didn't have my watch, but have no problem determining that the pace was slow.

this blog is all quiet now that 85% of you have voyaged to st. george. the hype returns tomorrow. i'll have to pencil in "race report reading" as this might take awhile. best of luck to all the runners.

*alright, i have been trying to post a new pic forever, but i can't get it right. the pixels are all funny. so i gave up. it's back to old lady until i figure it out...

PM run. first dam loop. this included an accidental dash through a large group in khakis getting family portraits taken on the USU campus (sorry!). canyon road is deceivingly long sometimes.

7 easy. felt good from start to finish. no more 2 mile hip warm-up required, which makes running so much more enjoyable. i'll attribute this to my 23 running miles last week.  i'll also attribute my roly poly-ness to my 23 mile week. attempting to combat that with 30 min weights/core work after my run.

53:30 / 7:40 average.

AM: toughening up my feet for winter. bike ride up old main hill in sandals. 19.7 pound backpack. can't remember the last time my heart was pounding that hard. made it to the wheezing stage. a few more pounds in the backpack and it would have reached obnoxious wheeze.

PM: 6 miles. first and last mile barefoot on TM. last mile in 6:30. feet caught fire around 0.7. really fun!

10 mile loop. slow climb up mountain road to dry canyon trail. was unsure of the distance at that point, so i just kept climbing up the trail until my watch hit 45 minutes. much faster on the way back down, but i am still pretty cautious on the uneven surface and loose rocks. guess that comes with experience.

the trail was very beautiful and peaceful. the last time i ran on it there was so much other crazy stuff swirling through my mind that i hardly remember the scenery. it's really pretty up there, especially with the fall colors.

cruised back down mountain road. it's a fairly steep grade, and i could hear my pounding footsteps echoing off the marvelous mountain rd. mansions. could possibly be in trouble for violating a noise ordinance in that area.

today was the best i have felt on a run since july. i feel like i have found my form and my stride again. no more hobbly hip or clunky running. i am definitely not as fit, but feeling so much better than the past month or so.

cool-down: 2 miles barefoot on TM.

PM: 45 min. weights/core --- back up to 3:45 on the planks. lost nearly 45 seconds in my 3 week hiatus from anything even resembling a plank. just under 3 months left to hit the 5:00 goal. torture.

at stake: $2,000 gift certificate toward a diamond @ s.e. needham's

the rules: dress in a costume - must be wedding-related.

super-fun race, though i didn't dress up so i was not eligible for the diamond prizes. i wish i would have, however, since most people did. many people went all-out ...full-on wedding gowns (mary ann), tuxedos WITH a cane (twinkies), wedding cakes (kaite lott) and some guy in a huge wood-framed car strapped on his shoulders, complete with "just married" and soda cans tied to the back. it was a frenzy! the race was very noisy with all the can-dragging, bells, popping balloons, dragging trains, etc. so funny. i was laughing the whole race.

wore my stealthy, ultra-light mizuno wave revolvers for this one. i haven't raced in these shoes since desnews '08, but this was going to be a short dash, so i wanted to maximize my dashiness.

race started on the quad and cruised down to center street, finishing on federal ave. in front of s.e. needham's. i chased wedding cake katie the whole way, finally catching and passing her in the final 50m to the finish. 1st place came in at 9:07 (ish ?), second place was 9:52 (ish ?) and i was 3rd in 9:56.  that was the most fun i have had at a dash in years. the highlight was watching mary ann kick to the finish completely decked out in a wedding gown (she even spray painted her running shoes white). she got the dress at D.I. and one of the first aid ladies at the finish line fell in love with it and bought it from her on the spot. seriously. too funny.

retry:

before my post got sucked into a black hole, i mentioned i watched the chicago marathon yesterday...

got lucky and picked both the winners. sammy wanjiru was almost a given, liliya shobukhova was just a lucky guess. she was running in the lead pack the whole race, and every time they would show her i would think "she's going to win it"

the commentators kept saying that she had great track speed (if it were to come down to a sprint), and she just looked stronger and more relaxed than the other runners. of course i wanted deena to win, but she didn't seem all that strong yesterday relative to the rest of the field. she still had a solid race though. around mile 19 one of the commentators said she had dropped out. i guess he meant she dropped from the pack, but i took it to mean she dropped from the race. relieved to see the final results showing she finished 6th with a 2:28:50 and first from the USA. fun morning.

usual tuesday loop around campus. unusually warm morning. wore my headlamp today.

as i was approaching the parking lot tunnel on 4th north, i could hear footsteps in the tunnel. i slowed down. the footsteps slowed down. then i stopped, and the footsteps also stopped. i completely froze and went into defense mode. all of a sudden this short little lady peered around the corner. she looked as terrified as i did. relieved, we both laughed and continued on our way. my heart was pounding though. glad i didn't have to break out my jiu jitsu. it was too early to be effective anyway.

breakfast: apples!!! [step aside bananas]. getting my full dose of quercetin [good hangman word] in with all the apples i am eating. my mom sent me the best apples from an orchard in alpine. crazy good.

AM: the base mileage continues...10 today.

APM: 1 hour weights/core

PM: 1 hour spin class. i signed up for this class yesterday. it's on MWFs until december. i want to build some extra leg strength. hopefully more leg power will help with the shorter races. also, i want to get in better cycling shape so that i can get to class faster in the mornings. right now i am just a huffing and puffing bike wimp.

i decided last night that i am going to make a return trip to arizona in january and run the rock n roll half marathon again. i had a lot of fun last year, and it's a great time of year to take a break and go somewhere warm. i need to figure out how to race half marathons, so the more the better. i have this slight issue with the half in that i run it at MP instead of HMP (as evidenced by my half splits in the marathon).

some other thoughts on racing next year:

-no more multiple marathons. 1 or 2 at the most. i want to race at my peak, rather than forcing multiple races when i am worn out.

-half marathons will be the focus leading up to grandma's in june. so i will probably run SLC half (if i ever get a check from this year...ha, only kidding! but really i'm serious) and ogden half, then a handful of 5 and 10Ks, but NO MARATHONS until june.

-this is all far away and subject to change dramatically.

it's fall break here at usu so i wanted to do something fallish. 2 hour trail run in dry canyon. here is what i found...

very slow on the way up. the pace was somewhere on the continuum of jog and power hike. plus i kept stopping to take pictures...so i won't really consider this part running. but i put my camera away and got serious on the way back down. no spills today, which was lucky because there was quite a bit of mud and loose rocks. only saw one other person the whole time. she had a dog with her that didn't like me at all. fun!

got a bit behind on my blog. lots going on this weekend.

AM: 5 miles. the weather was the definition of perfect all day.

this afternoon i rode my bike all over logan running errands. nearly died twice. the first one was bad driving green truck man's fault. the second one was my fault. i nearly lost control of my bike while giving the fist to bad driving green truck man.

1 hour weights/core

PM: 1 hour FFF spin class

i found out over the weekend that my class load drops from 15 credits this semester to 12 next semester, which means i am going to start work again. my boss was kind enough to be a bit more logical in his scheduling. so i will only be commuting once a week but will still get to teach all the sections of my class. how efficient.

mysterious tuesday loop.

class class class class class all day.

in my marketing class we discussed paradigm shifts and the tarahumara from northern mexico. they run up to 70 miles per day. day after day. the example was to show that this is their paradigm. it is how they are raised and the only lifestyle they know. most people are in awe of this and see it as impossible, but it is because we have a different paradigm of how we go about daily life. it brought to mind the born to run article on the discussion forum awhile back.

6 AM. 7 miles very easy. lots of cloud cover from the rain, so it was fairly warm and pleasant out this morning. stepped on a lot of soggy leaves.

question: is there a specific signal for telling someone that they don't have their headlights on?

i was waiting for a light at an intersection when a car pulled up without its lights on. i motioned to her by doing a sort of "burst" movement with my fingers to signal "lights" but she wasn't getting it. so then i yelled to her: "your headlights!" and pointed to the front of the vehicle. at this point the light turned green so i started to cross the street, yelling one more time "headlights!"

the driver was not happy with me. she gave me the ultimate stink eye; the kind you only see from your mom when she is bailing you out of jail (i kid, i kid).  i think she thought i was cursing at her. or maybe her headlights didn't work and she thought i was mocking her. or maybe she was in a getaway car after robbing the maverick and i was drawing too much attention. in any case, she angrily drove off...headlightless. i really hope she survived. it was sure dark out there this morning.

does a half marathon really need to cost $100? that's closing in on the price to run boston. for a half. maybe the finisher's medals are made of real gold. or maybe there is gold in the gatorade.

10 miles. campus/north logan/crow attack lane/temple loop.

cold. but a peaceful run in the fresh snowfall. i went fairly slow since most of the roads and sidewalks had patchy ice. a few close calls but no spills.

i refused to surrender my shorts for the tights.  no tights until january or sub-20 degrees, whichever comes first. it came close this morning at 25, but my legs stayed warm enough. it was my frozen hands that bothered me, but only for the last 3 miles or so.
