september!

8 miles at 4 am. it's the only chance i will get. tuesdays i am in class from 7:30 to 7:30. that's what happens when you enroll in a 10-month program that only meets twice a week. they suck every hour possible out of you.

hip same as yesterday. slightly painful warm-up but then all was well. kept it fairly easy and relaxed at 7:30 pace.

commute day. that means a PM run.

5 x 2:00 hill repeats. 7:30 average with a 6:17 mile to finish.

in terms of how i feel right now...80%. saturday afternoon i would have said 10%, so it's progress. hoping i will be up for a BW this weekend.

1 mile warm up barefoot on TM

6 miles on the roads, including a loop around the USU campus. wore the five fingers.

aside: it was lunch time and from some of the looks that i received, i have concluded that the fashionable college crowd does not approve of the creepy five fingers look.

the barefoot and VFF running are helping me to focus on my form. i have been favoring my left leg, even while walking, so i am focusing on keeping my weight balanced with every foot-strike. it seems to be helping tremendously. my hip feels almost completely better, and there is just a lingering twinge in the adductor...but nothing like i was feeling just a week ago. i think the yoga is helping as well. who knew?!?!

looks like the BW is a go for tomorrow. finally.

BW: slightly modified diamond workout with a slightly modified pacing structure (6:00 pace on the short intervals, MP on the miles). two slightly modifieds = modified. so i will call this one a MDWBW. see if you can crack that code.

warm-up: 4 miles easy. hip complained for 3.

400 - 1:29

800 - 3:00

4 mile tempo @ 6:30 pace (as opposed to 1 mile, 2 miles, 1 mile repeats)

800 - 2:58

400 - 1:27

4 more miles with 1-2 min. pick-ups

2 miles cool-down including a run to the store to buy breakfast. i literally had no food in my house this morning.

overall the hip was fine. after the first 4 and 8 it was warmed-up enough that i would say it was 100% and was a non-factor in the workout. i just have to be careful to keep it healthy and not aggravate it again over these next two weeks. i definitely feel like my fitness has gone south. it felt harder than usual, and i wasn't running as fast as previous diamond workout days. ehh.

note: things have been going well the past few days. hip has been improving greatly, i am nearly caught up with school and work assignments and it's a three day weekend, meaning one less day for me to commute next week. i am not one to have such luck, so something was bound to happen. 2 things actually. the radiator hose in my jeep got a tear in it. seemed to be a simple fix, but it took nearly 3 hours and cost some $$. THEN...my laptop decided to crash. it is very, very sick, i am afraid. i did everything within my realm of knowledge to fix the problem (reset to last known configuration, system restore, ran the chkdsk utility, etc). no luck. i still get this "corrupt file" message and it continually restarts itself. every time i connect to the internet, it crashes. virus? most likely. i took it in for repair yesterday and they still haven't gotten back to me. i am afraid it's toast. more $$$$$$$ out the window.

next note: without my computer, i can't charge my ipod. so no ipod means i play my own music in my head while i run. today, for whatever reason, i had the star-spangled banner stuck in my head the WHOLE time. i could not get it out. i had to memorize all 4 verses when i was in 6th grade, and wouldn't you know it, i still remembered them. over and over and over. not that it's a bad song, but even the best songs in the world get annoying when they are on repeat in your mind.

got some extra sleep in this morning. nice.

PM - bike ride to USU library. this will be routine until i get my laptop back.

a little tidbit from an article i am reading:

''once we become convinced that we must achieve a certain outcome, our universe collapses and we see everything through the narrow lens of the predetermined outcome. our awareness diminishes. our ability to invent totally new ways of responding to new challenges is lost. fear of failure increases." peter senge.

10 miles with a bit of trail.

i felt off at the start of the run. hamstrings were tight and my stride was funny. no pain from the hip though.

ran up mountain road. it eventually reaches a dead end at which point there are two trails to choose from. south or east. i chose east, because it continued to go up the mountain. the south trail flattens out and it is more of a "nature walk" type trail. i ran up only about 1.5 miles and reached a gate that was all chained up. i thought about hopping over it but then i got spooked because i realized that not a SINGLE person in the entire world knew where i was. so i turned around and headed back to the roads.

overall, a nice run with great weather.

another tribute to the new radicals: ♪ ♫  4 AM we ran a miracle mile ♪ ♫

early day. it was pretty chilly this morning. it didn't help that only a mile into my run i stepped in a deceivingly deep puddle from someone who had been watering their sidewalk for three weeks straight. so i had a sloshy right foot for 7 more miles. everything is feeling good. tightness from yesterday is nearly gone. i think the barefoot and five finger running from last week was causing the hammy/calf tightness, but all is well.

the hobbly hip has re-emerged! i knew i shouldn't have done that workout yesterday. the good news is that it isn't as bad as before, just the first 2-3 miles were quite slow and painful. once warmed up i felt fine, and with the taper next week hopefully it will go away for good. i am not sure i will ever figure this out.

still no laptop. i finally got a diagnosis today...a week later. one bad sector which will require a new hard drive and it won't be ready until tuesday. looks like another weekend at the library. really bad timing with all the papers i am trying to write.

joined up with jon's work club run this morning. ran from mile 3 to 17 on the TOU course with jon and cody. a bit chilly, but overall great weather and another nice tailwind. hip held up just fine, and we kept the pace rather easy, although i felt a bit more winded than usual. we ended up being short by .2 miles, but i followed cody in his obsession to get the 14. 13.84 is lame, jon. :)

wednesday!  i knew this was going to be a stressful day, so the goal was to not let it affect me, but rather embrace the stress...absorb it and store it in the form of back-up energy reserves. not sure this worked, but i tried...

3:30 AM - 4 quick miles

5:00 AM - out the door for the commute. no train today since i had too many errands to run.

7:55 AM - the guest speaker i set up for my 8:00 class called and cancelled. so i had to wing a 3-hour lecture. i picked my favorite topic... "nutrition for the athlete"...including an in-depth look at the science behind carb-loading.

11:00 AM - drove to SLC to pick up my CSA share. then stopped in sugarhouse to pick up a vegetable tray that i had ordered for my afternoon class. they somehow misplaced my order and did not have it ready, so i left empty-handed. back to draper for my next stop...harmons. i had to pick up 20 lbs.of gelato, another bribe for my afternoon class.

12:00 PM - back at work with my gelato and another lecture. but this time they were  interested because they were well-fed.

4:00 PM - commute home. stopped in layton to buy some towels for all the people that will be in and out of my house this weekend. i have never had house guests before, so i am ill-equipped to provide proper hospitality.

6:30 PM - finally made it back to logan and cruised into the USU service desk to pick up my laptop before they closed. STILL not done. STILL no laptop. so i parked in the library and now hopefully will get some studying done.

i'll post my "top 30" homework when i get a chance...may not be until tomorrow

i'll call this one a jog. reached "brisk jog" status a few times, but overall, a jog.

goal A: 2:55---this would be a PR. it is going to take a perfect day in order for this to happen, but i am not ruling it out as impossible. plan A will most likely cause the hip to lose all function, but it's the last race of the year so i am willing to take the risk.

goal B: 3:00---maybe even sneak in a 2:59. even though it's a B goal, it's probably more realistic for me. i think i can run my planned paces through mile 20, but my lack of training will show big time the last 6 miles.

goal C: 3:10-3:15--- final 6 mile death march at 10:00 pace.

goal D: 7:00---lose all function of the hip and stop at maverick at mile 17 for nachos.

no run today.

PM: packet pickup. not too bad at all. arrived at 4:30 and just hung out until 5. i wanted to get my stuff and get out ASAP. i met JD from the blog and talked with him for a bit while we waited for everything to open. 5:00 pm rolled around and there were already significant lines building. but they opened up on time and were super organized as usual, so it was very smooth.

shirt score: 0  this appears to be bad, but according to my scale, 0 is neutral. i don't like it any better or any worse than last year, so it gets a 0. it's orangey.

stopped at smith's on the way home and bought some black socks to convert to cheap arm sleeves. the canyon will be cold, but the rest of the race will be too warm to wear long sleeves. i did this last year and just threw them away around mile 8. works beautifully and then i don't have to dig through the clothes-drop piles.

pre-race: caught the first bus. before we left the driver asked if any of us were prone to motion sickness. "the road winds around a lot and i don't want none of yous gettin sick on mah bus" i just went to sleep and hoped the guy next to me wasn't the one with a weak stomach.

start line: hit the POPs early, then went down to the tent. found a nice warm corner and put in the ipod and just tried to relax. i went back up to the POPs for round two, and waited nearly 45 minutes. i finally bailed when it was 6:50 and there were still 10 people in front of me in line. i am not quite sure what people do in those things, but the last time i checked, POP business doesn't take 10 minutes. that seemed to be the standard amount of time for each person. it was frustrating, but i wasn't desperate, so i just ran down to the start line.

start: saw a few bloggers, including julie esplin (last year's runner-up), bec, jun, and of course, nan. i was pretty nervous but mostly excited. pilgrim guns fired and we were off.

miles 1 -13: nan took off fast, as did genevieve keogh. nan was quickly out of sight, and genevieve was within reach but i was not gaining on her. i ran next to mary ann for awhile, and we came upon gadget girl at about mile 7. we passed her just before the aid station but she cruised back up behind us again and we ran in a pack of 3 for about 4 miles. i dropped them both at the aid station at mile 11, and didn't see them the rest of the race. my main focus now was genevieve. she was still doing a good pace, but i wasn't losing ground on her, so i was hoping i could catch her once we left the canyon. i was mentally relieved to be running alone. i am more comfortable that way. hit the half in 1:28:03 ---1 min. slower than last year. already feeling bummed out.

miles 14-20: best part of the race for me. i felt strong, and i was clearly gaining on genevieve. i was keeping good splits for the most part, and just hoped i could keep this up for one more 10K.

mile 20: there was a nice pancake breakfast going on at zollinger park. i looked over and they were all sitting at the picnic tables eating and laughing. i decided i picked the wrong saturday morning activity. it was at this point that i got sucked into the downward spiral of the marathon black hole. i had a feeling this was going to happen. there was no more "go" but i still had six miles to cover. what to do? i was was hoping i could find someone who would lend me their skateboard or bike, but nobody seemed interested. so i went into grandma pace mode and hoped i would make it to the finish.

mile 21: i was slowly gaining on genevieve; she seemed to be struggling as well. she slipped into a POP and that is when i moved into 2nd place. 5 miles. hang on!

miles 22-23: i looked back on a turn and saw lady in pink...i knew immediately who it was...julie. i was happy to see her running so well. she caught and passed me in mile 23. i could not get myself to go with her. i was really, REALLY hurting at this point. she looked strong and built a good 2 minute gap on me. she ran so well today.

miles 24-25: 3rd place now. so slow, so slow. i saw my family at mile 25...i looked bad, really bad. my form was terrible and i was scooting along. they could tell. their cheers subsided to "just hang in there". i wanted one of them to come be a proxy runner for me. they all looked nice and fresh. but again, nobody seemed interested.

25-finish: drag. drag. dragging. i see julie up ahead, but there is no time to catch her. i found a little something at the end, mostly because i saw the clock ticking through 3:04 and change and i didn't want it to reach 3:05. i was pretty disappointed by now. crossed the line and sang out my tribute to mates of state: "done...DUST"  3rd place overall.

post-race: emotional meltdown. not because of the outcome of the race, but because i finally felt liberated from the mental and physical fatigue i have been battling the past month. i was actually really embarrassed by this, as i think i gave the impression that i was being a baby sore loser. but really i was just so overwhelmingly relieved and i guess this is how i responded. (sorry scott and carol...haha). i talked to a few bloggers, congratulated nan on her outstanding  performance (really, you've got to read it!) and then slipped away to come home for a bit before the awards.

so overall, this was my slowest marathon time of the year, which is funny because at the beginning of the year this race was my whole focus...the end goal with all the other races as training. BUT, i am ok with how it turned out today. i knew in the back of my mind that this is what i was capable of, and anything faster would have been a really, really good day for me. just glad to be done. i am done with work/commuting next week as well, so i can finally put my focus on school and have a little bit of breathing room to enjoy life more. i've had a nice ride this year. ups and downs. but all of it has been worth it and i have learned something from each race. i am going to take some time to recover both physically and mentally and then just go into base mileage mode until i feel the fire again.

this is significant because:

B) i am taking the stairs (soreness is minimal)

C) i think it caused my HR to go up a bit, so it was a nice XT session

ran with my friend kaite this morning. she is recovering from an achilles injury, so we were both content to go nice and slow. katie and i BQed at ogden together in 2007, then trained for boston through a treacherous logan winter in 2008. i haven't seen her since boston, so it was fun to catch up. katie is brilliant, so i love to pick her brain about all sorts of things. she is a dietitian and is currently taking a whole bunch of nutrition and exercise phisiology classes. today she taught me about concentric and eccentric muscle contraction, blood lactate and lactic acidosis. it was fascinating, and the run was over all too soon.

6 miles in 52 minutes. 8:40 pace, which felt very nice. everything feels fine...just a little complaining from the hip toward the end, but nothing horrible. TOU really didn't do as much damage to it as i thought it would.

must have overdone it yesterday...hip/ITB was not happy this morning. i was back to my hobbly stride, so i stopped at 2 miles. along the way i saw two other runners, and they were both gliding effortlessly and were in strong form.

i started thinking about it, and i haven't felt the effortless glide in my running for two months. then i thought about my best runs this year, and they all occurred soon after my 2.5 week hiatus in june. my first week back i set a sunnyside PR of 18:33, when normally it would take me 20-22 minutes. i also set two PRs in the 5K, and nearly every run i was feeling the effortless glide---snap in the legs, natural and comfortable form, good rhythm. i MISS feeling that way.

so i have resolved to hit the bike until everything is completely healed and i feel "right" again. my time on the bike in june not only gave my body a rest from the pounding, but it balanced the muscles and strengthened the areas that don't get worked as much while running. this could take a few days or even a few weeks, but i must find a solution. running keeps me sane in so many ways, and i need to get my health back so i can fully enjoy it and run without the nagging distractions.

in other news, i finally purchased a new juicer. my old one took a nasty spill when i was moving and it hasn't worked right since. this morning i went with the fall theme - carrot/apple with a pinch of cinnamon.

i was on my way to the killers concert last night but my jeep had other plans. it is back in the sick bay...will find out the diagnosis on monday. it was bound to happen.

at first i was pretty bummed about missing the concert, but it gave my sister a chance to take another friend and they had a good time, so it wasn't a total loss. i really just wanted to hear a dustland fairytale...

PM: leisure ride...lazy-coast and easy-pedal were my only gears today. 16 miles around logan and providence. another beautiful day.

i saw burt and a few of his friends along the way...

more thoughts from my thousands of pages of reading:

"the first step to improvement is dissatisfaction with the status quo. yet if one feels dissatisfaction, it must not be diverted into complaining; it must be actively linked to improvement. in this sense, we can say that dissatisfaction is the mother of improvement."

i was feeling good this morning, so i pre-blogged a PM 5-miler. ended up scratching it for one more day on the bike. i found something interesting about my hip and bike-riding yesterday. it pops when i pedal, but i have never noticed it popping when i run. it is not painful; it actually feels really good, like a re-alignment of sorts. that is why i opted for the bike again today.

conquered old main hill twice today. i deliberately planned out an inefficient schedule to ensure i made two trips up the hill. rode up to do some work on campus in the morning then went back up around 3 PM. took the long route home going past first dam and down along canyon road. then i just rode around for awhile through the neighborhoods around merlin olsen park so as not to waste the opportunity to enjoy the precious sunshine. it's all over tomorrow.

just over 10 miles round-trip, so a shorter ride than yesterday but much more intense. run is in the works for tomorrow...
