10 miles. sugarhouse loop/sugarhouse park. i ran the first 7 with andrea. it was a fun run with good conversation -- nice to get to know her better.

i was going to save the last 3 miles for a PM run, but i decided since i was already warmed up i should just finish out the full 10 (it takes awhile for my leg to warm up these days). i ran two more loops of sugarhouse park and then headed home.

half road/half trail 8k this morning in city creek canyon. this is a sports-am race put on by james zwick. he always does a good job -- his races are fun and affordable with no frills (it's a cotton t-shirt race!)

so, as the name implies, you run half the race on the road and half on the trail. this was my debut trail race, and my debut in the 8k, so i didn't know what to expect. in an effort to show my true naiveté about trail running, i showed up to the race wearing my hattori's. they actually ended up working quite well, but i think it was a lot of wear-and-tear for the very un-robust shoes to handle.

we started out running up the road by the access gate in city creek, and connected to the trail within about 150 meters. the trail was nice -- some good undulations with a few short but solid uphills and downhills. a good section of it was nice and shady, but the downside to that was that the trail was covered in patchy, stagnant mud. there were also a few sections where the grass/weeds became very tall and thick, so much so that the trail disappeared. i had a hard time on these sections -- i couldn't see the trail and we were running directly into the sun. i was momentarily disoriented and felt i was about to fall with each step. this part slowed me down a bit, but i was able to pick it back up once the trail widened again and things were more visible. i am not quite sure where the turn-around came, but i would guess it was somewhere around 2.7-2.8 miles. from there, it was a downhill sprint to the finish via asphalt -- something i am a little more familiar with.

i ran as hard as i could down the road given the somewhat steep grade and my somewhat weak tibia. i felt good, but my pace wasn't that spectacular. the road was just steep enough that it was difficult for me to get up to full speed without pounding/braking/breaking.

i finished in 34:13 and felt "i-have-no-idea-what-that-indicates" about my time. after the race, james and i went for a long cooldown, where we met up with kam who was coming down the canyon. the three of us ran back up to the 3.5 mile mark near the top of the canyon, then james and i split off to go back down and kam sojourned on.

17 miles total for the day; 60 for the week. my last 60 was in april. top of utah is in 5 weeks. yeek. brunch and grapefruit juice at ruth's diner to refuel.

15.000.000.003.0018.00

dart challenge 5k this morning -- yet another attempt at breaking 18:00 in the 5k. to get to the point: i ran an 18:32. i am not necessarily unhappy about that time, as it is pretty consistent with all of my other 5ks in the past year. but after today's race i have finally decided to stop kidding myself about my abilities in the 5k. i really have no business thinking that sub-18 is something i am capable of right now. it's not like i have strung together a dozen 18:05s and i just can't quite break the barrier. i am consistently 30-40 seconds off, which means i have a lot of work to do.

the sub-18 is just this arbitrary goal that i came up with last summer when my inability to break 18:00 in the 5k became almost comical (snafu in every race, it seemed). but since then i have had several really good opportunities, in terms of weather, accurate distance, good courses, etc. the closest i've come is 18:20, which really isn't that close at all when we are talking about a 5k race. sub-18 is just plain out of my range right now...

so on to the race -- it started out super fast because it was full of high-schoolers (fundraiser for davis high's xc team put on by corbin talley -- he did an excellent job). i started with a 5:50 first mile and slowly died from there. i ran most of the race in an ever-changing pack of high school guys -- a few surged ahead and a few fell back, and by last half mile i was running alone. i felt about as awful as a 5k should feel, and i could tell by mile 2 that sub-18 was not going to happen. i finished in a predictable 18:31 and immediately moved the sub-18 to my back pocket. it is certainly still a goal of mine, but it will require lots more work and a shift of focus in my training (maybe during the winter?)

i wanted 18 miles total for the day, so i planned on a long cooldown after the race. andrea joined james and i for about 5 miles, which just happened to be 5 oppressive miles over big concrete bridges into the sun and down into weird industrial parks (sorry andrea). we were searching for the parkway trail or some other bike path, but we basically just ended up going in a big, hot, cement-laden circle. james and i continued on into layton, where we aimlessly looped through some neighborhoods before heading back to kaysville. i was very tired and thirsty by the end of this one -- still need to work on that endurance.

after the race we drove up to henefer to tube down the weber river. the water was ice cold and felt great on my tired legs. we floated from henefer to taggart -- about 4 miles total. it was a very relaxing activity (only a few white-knuckle moments through some rapids). highly recommended after a race/long run combo.

Race: The MORE Project 5k (4.15 Miles) 00:24:25
Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
6.000.000.004.0010.00

this morning i ran the MORE project 5k, a fundraiser organized by the company my brother-in-law (jake) works for. the race started at the east river front park in south jordan and went along the jordan river parkway trail.

i started out a bit conservatively, but wanted to be sure i stayed in contact with the lead pack of four guys, one of them being jake. we ran through a roundabout and up to 106th south before breaking off onto the parkway trail. i passed two of the guys right as we entered the trail, and then the chase was on to catch jake and the other kid he was running with (turns out it was a xc runner from murray high named parker). i was slowly gaining on them, and was finally able to reach and pass them just after the 1 mile mark (approximately speaking -- there were no mile markers).

the course went under the bridge at 114th south then crossed the river via a small footbridge. then it went back up the main bridge and onto the road on 114th south. this is where the confusion began. we were supposed to go over the bridge, back onto the trail and then immediately turn off the trail onto the south river front parkway. unfortunately, there was no sign at the fork, and the woman who was supposed to be there to direct us hadn't made it to her station yet. i continued my way back along the the JRP, thinking i was heading back to the finish line to complete the loop. i should have discovered sooner that something was wrong, because all the runners coming in the other direction were giving me funny looks. i figured it was just because i looked funny, since i always do.

it didn't take much longer for me to discover that i had made a mistake and missed a turn somewhere. i knew i had over a mile left to get back to the start/finish area, yet my watch said 17:32. ohhhhh noooooo. i had already started surging a bit, anticipating the end of the race. but the end was not coming for awhile. shoot. i was tired. i had paced myself for 3.1 miles, and now i was on my way to 4.who-knows-what.

i finally made my way back to the finish line, thoroughly exhausted and somewhat annoyed that the ultimate 5k discomfort had now been extended to nearly a 7k. i saw some runners coming in from the other direction and figured i must have been the only one to go off course. i came through in 24:25, and the comedy of the 5k began: "hey, girl in purple, weren't you out front? (yes) "where did you come from?" (i came from an extended journey through the marshland) "did you win?" (no --there are five people ahead of me in the chute) "didn't you hear the course directions?" (yes?) "didn't you follow the signs?" (no) "was there anyone there to direct you?" (no) enter mom: "i thought you had died out there!" (almost) enter random woman: "you poor thing, you must have ran over 15 miles!" (no).

knowing that this was going to take some time to sort out, i immediately set out to re-run the course and discover where i made my error. i figured it would probably be helpful for them to know where i went off course so that they could at least have that information when figuring out the results. i made my way back to the footbridge, and this time there was a woman standing at the turn-off  directing all the runners to where i should have gone. i then found out that not only had i missed the turn on the way back, but some of the other runners discovered it early and cut out the footbridge loop entirely. so now the results had times posted for three different distances: 2.8 miles, 3.1 miles and 4.15 miles. luckily, the bulk of the crowd ran it correctly, and only one guy ended up following me on the long course (sorry parker).

as expected, it took the directors quite awhile to figure out how to interpret the results. after much deliberation and informal polling, they concluded i had won for the females and parker had won for the males (based on where we were at in relation to the rest of the field before we went off course). i didn't feel great about claiming this unofficial victory, as there were multiple "winners" in this race (one of them being my awesome sister jessica, who came in right around 22:00 and was the first female for the true 5k distance).

while it was unfortunate that that the directions were unclear on the course, i should have been more aware and paid better attention to the map/directions before the race. hats off to the organizers for working so hard to sort it all out and try and make things as fair as possible.  overall the race was very nice -- they had a great turnout and raised a significant amount of money for families living in poverty in brazil.

the highlight of the morning: my grandparents came out to run the race. they mostly walked, but they did pick it up to a jog every now and then and they both did great. my grandma came in just under 50 minutes; my grandpa just under an hour. i was very proud of them. after the race my grandma was quite hot and tired, and discovered the giant tub full of mona vie energy drinks. she downed one rather quickly and then took two more for the road. in her words: "wow, i like these. they make me feel peppy."

10 miles. brickyard loop. i saw an unusually large number of people out and about this morning. the weird part was that most of them were just casually walking down the streets like it was the middle of the day (i.e. a guy walking down the sidewalk eating chips and a woman all dressed up carrying a briefcase). it was very strange and it made me feel uneasy, as it's rare for me to see anyone except for the occasional cyclist or dog walker.
