half road/half trail 8k this morning in city creek canyon. this is a sports-am race put on by james zwick. he always does a good job -- his races are fun and affordable with no frills (it's a cotton t-shirt race!)

so, as the name implies, you run half the race on the road and half on the trail. this was my debut trail race, and my debut in the 8k, so i didn't know what to expect. in an effort to show my true naiveté about trail running, i showed up to the race wearing my hattori's. they actually ended up working quite well, but i think it was a lot of wear-and-tear for the very un-robust shoes to handle.

we started out running up the road by the access gate in city creek, and connected to the trail within about 150 meters. the trail was nice -- some good undulations with a few short but solid uphills and downhills. a good section of it was nice and shady, but the downside to that was that the trail was covered in patchy, stagnant mud. there were also a few sections where the grass/weeds became very tall and thick, so much so that the trail disappeared. i had a hard time on these sections -- i couldn't see the trail and we were running directly into the sun. i was momentarily disoriented and felt i was about to fall with each step. this part slowed me down a bit, but i was able to pick it back up once the trail widened again and things were more visible. i am not quite sure where the turn-around came, but i would guess it was somewhere around 2.7-2.8 miles. from there, it was a downhill sprint to the finish via asphalt -- something i am a little more familiar with.

i ran as hard as i could down the road given the somewhat steep grade and my somewhat weak tibia. i felt good, but my pace wasn't that spectacular. the road was just steep enough that it was difficult for me to get up to full speed without pounding/braking/breaking.

i finished in 34:13 and felt "i-have-no-idea-what-that-indicates" about my time. after the race, james and i went for a long cooldown, where we met up with kam who was coming down the canyon. the three of us ran back up to the 3.5 mile mark near the top of the canyon, then james and i split off to go back down and kam sojourned on.

17 miles total for the day; 60 for the week. my last 60 was in april. top of utah is in 5 weeks. yeek. brunch and grapefruit juice at ruth's diner to refuel.

From Jake K on Sat, Aug 13, 2011 at 18:29:50 from

Congrats on winning half of a trail race and half of a road race. Altogether, a pretty good day!

From seeaprilrun on Sat, Aug 13, 2011 at 18:43:46 from

Another win! Yeah! You are back from the land of broken tibias! I hear they are much stronger after they heal from a stress fracture anyway!

From Rachelle on Sat, Aug 13, 2011 at 20:41:43 from

Nice race Allie!

From Andrea on Sat, Aug 13, 2011 at 21:54:41 from

Nothing beats a PR, especially when you've never run that distance before! We should start putting together races that are really strange distances so we can PR all the time :o)

From Andrea on Sat, Aug 13, 2011 at 21:55:20 from

OR maybe we should just run faster. haha

From Dan on Sat, Aug 13, 2011 at 22:48:53 from

Nice race Allie and very nice week. :)

From Lily on Sat, Aug 13, 2011 at 23:27:52 from

I think we should do what Andrea said. Let's start races with weird distances for new PR's :)

Nice job Allie. I actually have run this distance, but it was all dirt trail with a lot of elevation and my time is a little longer than this :) You're the woman!

From Merri on Sat, Aug 13, 2011 at 23:30:35 from

eek is right look out TOU Allie is gonna get you. :) good job on the 4.97 mile race.

From RAD on Sun, Aug 14, 2011 at 04:13:23 from

From Becky1 on Sun, Aug 14, 2011 at 10:35:03 from

Congrats on the win!!! Agreed on Sports-Am races, I like the low key vibe there.

Breakfast at Ruth's is one of my favorite things. Those biscuits are wicked good!

From Oreo on Sun, Aug 14, 2011 at 11:19:35 from

Awesome JOB! You - Smoked that race!

Breakfast at Tiffany's is pretty cool too.

From Seth on Sun, Aug 14, 2011 at 11:21:30 from

Nice work Allie! Don't see too many races like that, distance or terrain wise. Congrats on the 60 mile week.:)

From Andy on Sun, Aug 14, 2011 at 12:18:56 from

Congrats on the win. Great mileage this week. Sounds like you are all the way back from your injury.

From timp on Sun, Aug 14, 2011 at 20:55:15 from

From Smooth on Sun, Aug 14, 2011 at 21:09:52 from

GREAT JOB allie! CONGRATZ on the win and the nice mileage! So happy to hear the tibia handled the downhill pavement well.

From Chad Robinson on Sun, Aug 14, 2011 at 22:15:30 from

NIce job on the win and I hope all is feeling well. I now have a 4-mile pr time. Anyone up for a 7 mile race?

From auntieem on Sun, Aug 14, 2011 at 23:16:38 from

Sounds fun! Congratulations on the trail! I actually love the Hattoris on soft trail wothout big rocks, but I will probably wear them out very quickly.

From JulieC on Sun, Aug 14, 2011 at 23:30:47 from

Go Allie!! 5 weeks is all? YIKES but YAHOO as well. : D. I know you will run well.

From runningafterbabies on Mon, Aug 15, 2011 at 00:20:22 from

Solid run, Allie. Are you going to be at Hobble Creek again this year? It was fun seeing you (briefly) as I was finishing my last mile last year.

From Stacie on Mon, Aug 15, 2011 at 00:44:05 from

Yay! So happy for you! Excited for what lies ahead. Sorry I won't be at TOU this year. That was a fun bus ride up wasn't it?

From Stacie on Mon, Aug 15, 2011 at 00:46:38 from

There's an 8k downhill dash @ Alta in Sept. I ran it last year. It was pretty fun.

From allie on Mon, Aug 15, 2011 at 00:56:53 from

thanks everyone.

odd-distance races are a great idea. the best part would be selling the "11.4" or "7.7" bumper stickers.

RAB - no HC run this year. i was planning on it but have since been enticed by a flat 5k in kaysville. i'm still seeking the sub-18. grrr.

stacie - yes, that was the best bus ride of my life :)

From Rossy on Mon, Aug 15, 2011 at 01:29:21 from

Allie, Zwick rocks and is a strong candidate for FRB RD Of The Year in my book! I'm so glad you filled in for me on this race; that is, I have run this one the last two years, but with my b-day falling on it this year I just concentrated on running my age. I should have probably mixed this one into my run. Anyway, awesome job on the half trail/half road 8k PR!!!

From Claudio on Mon, Aug 15, 2011 at 14:11:07 from

Nice job Allie, congratulations on the win!

From Chad on Mon, Aug 15, 2011 at 14:25:53 from

Sweet. And nice run in your slippers. :)

From flatlander on Mon, Aug 15, 2011 at 23:20:12 from

Congratulations on the win. One would never know from your report how well you ran.
