18:18 at draper days today -- 5:44, 5:42, 6:15, :38

i'm very happy about this and i feel like i finally had a race that i can call a success after several flops so far this year. this is also a 5k PR -- my previous PR on a flat and accurate course was 18:20 at tremonton in late 2010 when i was in decent 5k shape.

the race was very fun and competitive as usual:

1-susannah hurst 18:03

2-janae richardson 18:09

3-stefanie talley 18:17

4-allie s'moore 18:18

5-devra vierkant 18:26

while i know that anything can happen in the marathon, i thought that if i could break 18:30 it would be a good indication that i am prepared for des news. i'm hoping the outcome of today's race means my goal of sub-2:54 is reasonable. then again, it's des news -- i could end up running 6:37.

From jun on Sat, Jul 21, 2012 at 12:17:42 from 65.130.142.12

I think you should try and run a 6:37 at Des News. I actually think that would be harder for you.

From flatlander on Sat, Jul 21, 2012 at 12:34:30 from 76.31.26.153

From TexasLindsey on Sat, Jul 21, 2012 at 13:36:23 from 70.253.137.155

Allie,

You are amazing! It's always so inspiring to read your blog because of your attitude. I can't replicate your speed (a lot slower) but I try to emulate that attitude... it's a great strength!

Plus, you're always an entertaining read because you are such a good storyteller! I can't wait to find out what happens next!

From Bam on Sat, Jul 21, 2012 at 13:46:50 from 213.191.245.19

Well done on a great race and breaking 18:30 - not to mention the PR. I like the chart. It must fill you with confidence for the marathon. I'm sure you'll run well. It's a fact that you run faster when you're married - don't ask me why, I can't think of a quip that's politically correct:) Good luck on your first marathon as a married woman.

From Jake K on Sat, Jul 21, 2012 at 14:14:12 from 184.167.8.115

Awesome job Allie!!! A PR in the 5k is never an easy thing to do, even when you are in very good shape. Good sign for Tuesday! I think you are spot on w/ your target/ goal for des news... Go out and crush it!

From JulieC on Sat, Jul 21, 2012 at 14:37:05 from 70.56.109.190

Way to go on the 5k pr!! also about your des news plans--- wow you got it down, calculated....my one worry (and I don't mean to put a seed of doubt just a word of caution and not OVERHEAT. I would venture to guess (unless a cold front is in the making) this will be the HOTTEST year you have run Des News. Play it safe in the early miles...and you better take in more than one gu chomp!! : D. will be thinking of you while I am at work!! Excited for you. Go fight WiN!!

From PRE on Sun, Jul 22, 2012 at 06:29:35 from 99.50.213.11

Allie,

Hi. Those were great photos of the wedding. Thank you for sharing those.

Your 5K time is identified as 18:30 for the July 21st Draper Days 5K in the left hand margin of your blog but as 18:18 in the race report.

Congratulations on the 18:18 PR for the 5K from 18:20!

1st-4th place times at 18:03, 18:09, 18:17 and 18:18…so very close race (my perspective) and must be some kind of an experience running head to head like that always having your eye on people in front, planning your next move to overtake, etc!

Also must be a strange feeling being in first (as you have been many times) and knowing there are people in back of you, planning and scheming to overtake you as well!!

Be well.

From SlowJoe on Sun, Jul 22, 2012 at 07:17:20 from 69.131.141.92

Congrats Allie - all that data really does seem to point toward success on your goal (and a really good 2012). You will definitely get that sub-18 soon.

From Kelli on Sun, Jul 22, 2012 at 10:13:49 from 67.172.235.55

WOW, look at your mileage! I always wonder about the higher mileage thing and how it helps or hinders runners. You seem to be handling it all well and it is paying off, obviously! Great job on the 5k PR and competing with the speediest of the speedy. Why Draper Days?? I know you all show up every year, there must be a reason! Just curious.

Enjoy some rest and good food the next few days-looking forward to hearing all about Deseret News and hoping you do not see the 6's in your finish time. Seriously? ;o) Wish I was gonna be there this year, I would come out of the porta potty to see you finish!

From Bec on Sun, Jul 22, 2012 at 12:20:47 from 71.199.9.12

Awesome 5k Allie! That is some serious speed from you. Actually, all 5 of you! Good luck on Tuesday. I might be the one coming in at 6:37.

From allie on Sun, Jul 22, 2012 at 17:13:01 from 174.23.135.116

thanks everyone. i appreciate the comments. i may have done something really silly yesterday in that i am SORE today. if i remember correctly that is not what you want to have happen during the taper...eh.

andrea -- it appears we need to start scheduling regular trips to brazil and/or england.

thanks again to all of you and best of luck to everyone racing on tuesday. if you aren't racing, best of luck with your work weeks. :)
