9 miles. i ran up to the U of U w james via sunnyside/foothill (fyi: his beard is now 7 feet long!). i took several long drinks from The Great Math Department Drinking Fountain and then ran home via south temple/des news finish.

this wraps up my highest mileage week ever at 93 (counting from fri-thurs). overall i am feeling good -- my legs feel fatigued but nothing is sore or out of sorts. i'm planning to drop it down to ~80 miles next week and then really start tapering down 10 days out.

10 miles. i ran up to campus with james then made my way back home via sunnyside down. i stopped at the east high track and did 4x400m (200m rec jog): 78, 77, 78, 78. workout failbail -- these were 2-3 seconds slower than i wanted and they felt awful. it is time to wrap up this training cycle.

FYI: for those times when you are spring cleaning/dejunking/downsizing...lasting engraving in logan has a great recycling program for race medals, etc.

the plan today was a progressive effort starting at MP. 6:29, 5:42 (short?), 6:53 (long?), :44. i felt okay, but it definitely didn't feel smooth and breezy.

 i liked the modified course, especially the little dirt trail section with the bike jump. i caught a bit of air there. devra, jenny, and emily went 1,2,3. wooo!

5 miles around sugarhouse. i had to dodge a camera crew doing some sort of early morning film project in front of barbacoa. i was also nearly taken out by an out-of-control rollerblader who came bursting out of her driveway.

i'm feeling good. my legs have been mostly dead for the past four weeks, so it's nice to feel some life in them again.

the splits tell you what kind of day i had. this was without a doubt the hardest and most miserable race i have ever run. i don't know what happened. i went in feeling rested, fit, and confident that i could run 2:49-2:50. fueling was good (i thought), taper was good (i thought), and it seemed like things were working well throughout this training cycle. i'm at a loss right now on why things went so wrong. 20+ minutes slower than last year -- it's so far off and i'm still trying to process it. i'm also having trouble reconciling the conflicting emotions of winning a marathon while at the same time feeling like i completely failed.

i really don't want to relive this experience, so i will keep the recap short. i was working way too hard going up little mountain (6-8). i recovered briefly and felt good over miles 9-12, and then everything just went to pieces. it happened so fast and so early; i had no idea what was happening to me. i have never experienced such a bad crash.

i do not remember much over the last 10k, other than the miles were going by painfully slowly and i felt like i would never get to the finish. i had to completely stop at the aid stations and stabilize myself on the water tables just to grab a cup. i was running with my head down because i couldn't bear looking at the course ahead. i was weaving and running into cones and cursing and my shoes were making an annoying squeaking noise because they were filled with all the water i was dumping on myself.

i crossed the line and immediately fell to the ground. everything was blurry and i was out of it. after i was finally able to stand up, it was revealed that my asphalt zone of choice had a vomit surprise on it, and i had been laying in it. this day.

what went wrong? did i overtain? maybe, but up until this morning i didn't think so. i bumped my mileage up just a bit from what i was doing last year, but it wasn't anything drastic, and i never felt like i was overdoing it or digging a hole. i thought i confirmed this with my last few workouts and my tune-up 5k -- it seemed like i was ready. everything went according to plan and then...nightmare race.

this is the third big race this year where i have gone in with a good background of workouts and smaller races and then completely tanked in the race (the woodlands, uv half, des news). a handful of races have been better for me this year than in the past, but all of my big goal races have been worse and i don't know why.

~6 mile hike in the uintas. the joke was: lots of lakes. my legs are still pretty sore (quads), so the hiking was awkward but i do feel a lot better now. a couple of cold lake soaks helped. it was good to get away.

we're moving to atlanta this next week, so i probably won't be posting on here for bit. i won't be running much anyway -- i'm taking some extra time to recover and regroup.

james will be starting work at georgia tech, but i'll be back in utah until september to finish out my job and give TOU one more go.

off. nightmare moving day.

we found out that one of the new tenants moving into our house was extra tall (?) so he was bringing his own bed with his custom, extra long mattress. we had just purchased a new bed and mattress for that particular room about a month prior, so it was brand new. we decided we would have to move it to the upstairs, but the box spring wouldn't fit in our very narrow staircase (the house is super old, built in 1903). 

new plan: hoist it up through the window (which required us to take apart a very complicated window and then it wouldn't go back together and we wasted another 45 minutes on that project).

we tied a rope to the mattress and tried to lift it from the ground, but it was too unstable. so we pulled my car up to the side of the house and i lifted while james pulled -- still no luck. then the pest control guy showed up and offered his ladder. at this point, james was upstairs trying to pull the mattress through the window; the pest control guy was on the ladder, wobbling, sweating, and holding the mattress with one hand; and me on the ground holding the pest control guy's feet and screaming. 

in the end, it didn't work, and we left it on the porch to be scooped up by a KSL shopper (we were deseperate -- we had to be out of the house by 4pm). 

then i spent the rest of the afternoon sitting in a tree and chopping off branches with a hacksaw.

after that, i took a red-eye to atlanta to move in to our new apartment and james went to live in a random basement in sugarhouse that one of his math friends offered up for a few days. then james defended his thesis and moved to atlanta and i moved into my car.
