sea level track workout. 5 x 1600m.

5:52, 5:44, 5:43, 5:43, 5:42

the first one was quite a shock to my body. i slogged through the warm up because i was feeling terrible (james dropped me three times), so i wasn't really prepared to start running fast. reps 2 - 4 felt good -- comfortably hard. i was really working on the last one, and i wanted to go under 5:40, but i split the 800 too slowly (2:52) and couldn't get it back.

i'm taking this workout with a grain of salt lake city, since i probably would have been 5-10 seconds slower in utah. so really it wasn't that great of an effort, but i'm ok with it because i have a lot of accumulated fatigue in my legs right now.

des news is three weeks from today. this is where my thursday-wednesday weeks are actually going to be relevant. i hit 85 last week and 80 this week. i'm going to start tapering down now -- a longer taper than usual for me, but i don't think there is much more i can do or benefit from at this point. i'm not planning on any major cutbacks until 7 days out, but i am going to bring the mileage down a bit next week in hopes to get my legs back.

pm - hiked mount si in the cascades. the summit was 4,167 feet, so we almost made it to the elevation of salt lake city. views at the top were spectacular.

11.5 miles with devra on the JRP. three miles at 6:28 average pace.

this was an aborted workout. the plan was 15 with 5 @ 6:20-6:30, but a mile into the tempo we realized we were going to have to make some adjustments. we started at 5pm and it was 102F. the trail was just baking in the sun. i hate making excuses (whine, it's sooo hot -- bonnie, i'm a wuss!). i was trying to just suck it up and get it done, but my body wasn't having it. i've put too much into this training cycle to blow it on a forced wonder woman workout, so we shut it down (devra is kind).

so...not the best confidence builder two weeks out from the marathon, but now is not the time to fall in a hole.

tour de run -- this is a three stage race consisting of a 5k (friday at 7:30pm), 10k (saturday at 7:00am), and 4.4 miles (saturday at noon).

 race time splits average pace
 5k 18:35 5:42, 5:56, 6:05 5:59
 10k 39:356:26, 6:30, 7:23, 6:12, 5:54, 5:56, 1:14 (.2) 6:23
 4.3 miles 28:00 6:07, 6:08, 6:45, 6:59 6:29

-total time over the three stages was 1:26:10 for 13.6 miles (6:20 average pace).

-i could have paced the 5k better -- i went out too fast because i was just way too excited about the tour.

-the 10k was probably my best performance out of the three races. there was a good hill climb between miles 2 and 3. i really felt strong on this run.

-the last stage was pretty brutal after running the 10k, and the noon-hour temps weren't helping. this course went downhill on the way out and uphill on the way back.

-this race was so fun -- great courses for each stage, and a unique and challenging format. it's organized by people who know running and who know how to organize running. i loved the whole concept and i had a great time. i hope this event continues to grow.

i have officially entered the taper phase, which means i start wasting time on useless things like this.

the purple line shows the "ideal" splits (or 2013 goal splits), according to james' awesome-nerdy spreadsheet that accounts for both grade and elevation. it's pretty conservative for the uphill portion in miles 6-8, but maybe that is the key. it's also pretty optimistic over the final 10k. that's when the "des news" factor comes into play -- you can see what has happened to me in the past :)

day off. this is my last thursday - wednesday week, then i will return to the normal arbitrary mileage counting system. the plan: off, 8, 6, off, 5, 2, race.

i have tweaked this taper plan several times over the last two years, with small changes in mileage and/or the timing of the "off" days. the particular plan above is what i followed for TOU 2011, so i'm going to try that again.

i will still get some good time on my feet today -- my car needs new brakes, so i'll be dropping it off and then walk-jogging to work and back. :joy

draper days 5k tomorrow! one of my favorite races. i raced this hard last year and that was a poor decision, so this year i'm planning to use it as a sharpening workout -- 3 miles at MP. "it should feel very comfortable and you should easily recover from it" -- fiddy.

hope so.

i came home with a dirty dash flyer, a shoe horn, and a piece of taffy.

26.200.000.000.0026.20

marathon #26. des news #7. and my first marathon wearing skechers.

splits: 6:20, 6:23, 6:00, 6:33, 6:02, 6:49, 7:13, 7:00, 6:24, 6:26, 6:22, 6:18, 6:17, 6:12, 6:07, 6:15, 6:22, 6:41, 6:23, 6:34, 7:08, 6:26, 6:44, 6:40, 6:49, 8:44 (1.2)

here is the updated split chart (the green "target" line shows my goal splits for a 2:53).

first half: 1:24:51; second half: 1:26:43

----------------------------------------------------------

as mentioned above, my goal was to run 2:53 -- arbitrary and pointless for des news, but i made the goal anyway. i had five-mile target splits written on my arm, and i was consistently about 2 minutes ahead of a 2:53 finish throughout the entire race. so i knew if i hung on i would come in around 2:50-2:51, but of course i had no idea if i was going to hang on.

the first 15 miles of the race were...lonely. quiet running. all i could hear was the incessant "clicking" of the chip on my shoe (tighten those zip ties, ma'am). the canyon was nice and cool, and the scenery was beautiful, so i was enjoying myself. but at the same time, running solo meant i was left alone with my thoughts, and i was having a hard time keeping them positive -- i'm going to blow up, probably. my quad muscles are going to come out my knees, probably. i'm hungry, definitely.

somewhere around mile 12 or 13, i started feeling fuzzy-headed. i was very concerned because that's how i start to feel in stage 1 of crash mode. it's likely that it was just in my head, seeing as it was still so early in the race, but i was still worried. i started second-guessing my pre-race eating strategies and worried maybe i hadn't fueled enough.

but what do you know! just as all of this was going through my mind, i saw cam-with-a-c running up the course. as he went by, he asked me if i wanted a shot blok. i gladly accepted it. i spent the next half mile or so sucking on the shot blok until i was able to get some water at the next aid station. whether it was a real fuel issue or just in my head, this revived me. i felt a lot better after getting that bit of sugar going in my mouth. thanks, cam.

i got another good boost of energy from the cheering group of spectators at the mouth of the canyon. i was also passing half marathoners at this point, and they were all very enthusiastic and supportive as the marathoners went by. i was worried the canyon was going to be too congested with the half marathon this year, but it was actually really nice to run those final few canyon miles with more people around. and it wasn't congested at all.

next up -- the crestview hill and the hogle zoo monster mile. i caught up to rob murphy and two of his xc runners at the top, and we also scooped up some other guy who had been running just ahead. right after that, we saw andrea, and she joined the group as well. i went from running alone to running in a giant pack of friends, all in a matter of about two minutes. i was very excited about this -- the stretch on wasatch is pretty brutal. andrea kindly kept us distracted with updates from the 10k and the half.

rob decided to say goodbye at 17, and i continued on with andrea. she stayed with me through 20-ish, saying all the right things to keep me focused on the race yet distracted from my misery. it was perfect.

mile 21 is another beast mile with a hill. it's a small hill, but it feels huge. the goal is to get to the scout building on foothill, and then there's lots of downhill to work with in 22. i saw james just before the hill. he gave me a pack of shot bloks, which i held for about 30 seconds and then gave them back, citing that they were too heavy (they were!). i also didn't know when another aid station was coming, and i was worried about stomach issues, so i just let it go. at this point i was feeling fine fuel-wise. my legs were definitely hurting, but holding up.

i got myself going again on the foothill/5th south downhill, and i kept a good pace all the way through 1300 east. then i started struggling again on the hill leading up to south temple. i saw jake here -- now it was his turn to join in on the fun. also! i need to mention that amiee is a bike wizard and somehow managed to be at like 30 different spots along the route, including one whiz-by on foothill where she gave a small "woooooooooooooo" as she went by. it was great and it kept my spirits up. a lot of awesome friends out there today.

so anyway, back to south temple. the block counting begins. six blocks. five blocks. four blocks. jake told me a great story about karl malone (it's linked on his blog; check it out). i also insecurely drew attention to my salty sweat here, because what else was there to do? three blocks. i'm hurting. two blocks. looking for that mile marker. 24. 24. 24...

the turn onto 300 east was rough -- one more big downhill push. the last thing the quads want. this is where my first moans and groans (and maybe a few expletives) appeared. they would only escalate throughout the remainder of the race.

300 east wasn't so bad this year -- it usually seems soooo oppressively long, but the first time i looked up at the street signs, we were already at 400 south. just three blocks to the next turn. it was here (i believe) that there may have been an issue with the TRAX, had i been running faster. i saw it go by and thought "ohhhh nooo, how many cars are attached to that thing? i swear i will run straight into the side of it because there is no way i can stop without stopping for good." luckily, it was a short train and it cleared the intersection just before we came through.

next up, the turn onto 700 south and then 200 east -- this is the brief section on the parade route. i hit the last aid station and took six cups of water (i robbed every single volunteer in that station -- i told them i wanted all the cups. $82.25 worth of cups). two cups went on my legs. one cup went over my head (and mostly got in my left eye), and three splashed into my face and mouth.

one-point-two miles to go.

uhhhhh, 800 south. jake was yelling all sorts of motivating things, and i was responding with groans and cursing (sorry, it's all i had). james appeared near our house (yay, des news house!) and he joined in on the motivational yelling. i was trying so hard to keep the pace up, as i knew i was close to 2:50:XX and thought maybe i could find that one last gear to push it in.

alas, i couldn't find it. my legs were wobbly, and as i tried to speed up they felt like they were just going to give way. i finally reached the flashing motorcycle parked at 600 east (the last TARGET before the finish line). from there, it was just about getting to the finish line, and celebrating the win that i so badly wanted today.

i rounded the corner and gave a few high fivers to my family, and then went across the line -- happy and relieved (there is a pic floating around out there with my arms out. please disregard -- i'm very embarrassed about that). i actually don't even remember this -- i was not in control of any of my limbs or emotions at that point.

then i decided that i wanted to lie down on the asphalt, and this photo emerged.

a big shout-out to my family and my friends who were there for me today. james, andrea, jake, amiee -- you all were so awesome. thank you. i also have to give a lot of credit to the great people i have been able to train with this year (mainly, devra) -- it has made all the difference for me and has kept me motivated and inspired. i have tweaked my training quite a bit, adding in the stuff that in the past i have deemed unnecessary (specifically, track workouts). this is where i really think i made the jump -- in those weekly track sessions that were just awful and oxygen-less. it helped me to build more strength, drop some weight, and improve my form a bit. it also helped me learn how to tolerate more of the intolerable. i think all of those things helped me today.

moving forward -- top of utah. but i can't get ahead of myself. the #1 thing to do right now is to make sure i fully and properly recover from this race before i jump into the next one. i have my training plan laid out, and i have given myself a full week of recovery, which i plan to take not only because i'm tired, but because i literally can't run (or really even walk) for at least a few days. the turnaround time is eight weeks. it should be enough time to recover and then get another good short cycle in, but it all depends on if i am feeling truly healthy. i am not going to force it like i did in 2009. it's not fun.

here are a few photos from the deseret news:

behold the sunrise with skechers...

high-fives to my family right before the finish. yes, i lost focus.
