my racing plans are a bit askew after experiencing another hiccup in my training last week. the same issues that i have been having with my right shin/calf have now appeared on my left shin/ankle. i have been so busy coddling my right leg that i never saw this coming.

i decided to forgo racing on saturday in hopes of preventing a more serious injury. i have been running on sore legs for the past two weeks, feeling progressively tighter with each passing day. very ogden2009-esque.

so after a weekend of rest, i set out to run today. i ran 5 miles, and felt okay for the most part, but something is still 'off' -- lots of tightness and pressure build up that is causing quite a bit of pain in my lower leg. definitely runnable, but probably not raceable. i will see how the rest of the week goes before i make a decision about saturday.

40 minutes spinning -- hard effort. weights and plank. i'm scheduled to go in for ART this morning and i am hoping that this will be the solution.

it has now been 370 days since i last ran on a treadmill. i stopped treadmill running in an attempt to get rid of (and further avoid) the little injuries that plagued me throughout 2009 and the beginning of 2010. it worked for 11.9 months.

7 miles. brickyard loop. feeling good -- just needed a couple of days off.

my sweet grandma just sent me a great email:

"Just finished "Born To Run."  What a great and interesting book.  Like one of the people wrote -- "it made me want to get out and run."  I didn't do this, but, when the weather gets back to "Spring" I am going to try jogging again.  Got the inspiration. I'm going to do it -- slowly -- not on steep mountains, but, down the road and around the neighborhood -- even if I have to wear my "old person's" knee brace."

the morning began with a nice drive up emigration canyon to drop off james for his long run. there was a light rain and the temperature was cool but reasonable. the canyon was extremely green and peaceful, and i was jealous that i would not be embarking on this adventure today. all in due time...(see burt for the definition of "cliche")

james wanted to go to the actual starting line of des news, but a locked gate stood in our way, complete with a rusted chain and padlock. james wisely decided to adjust his route, rather than risk running through the gate and into some sort of terrible mudslide or wagon train. i ended up dropping him off under the bridge at the golf course, then drove back down to the U of U campus to start my run.

and what a great run it was! i ran up sunnyside to the zoo, then turned up crestview and onto wasatch drive (on the des news course). the plan was to run miles 16-21 of the course, and meet james back on campus. the goal was to do all of this before he caught up to me. it proved to be rather close.

the first three miles of the run were quite painful, and i was limping more than i was running. eventually it became bad enough that i was no longer enjoying the run (that takes a lot). so i stopped. i knew it was not sensible to keep running, and quite honestly i no longer wanted to be running in that state. i kept trying to focus my mind on other random topics, but the only thing i could think about was a giant cracked bone being hit with a mallet every time i took a step with my left foot. right step, ouch. right step, ouch. right step, OUCH! STOP RUNNING ALLIE!

so there i was. 3 miles into my 8 mile loop. walking. limping. sulking. in the rain. i thought it was the perfect moment to be really dramatic -- i could fall to my knees and weep. i could grasp my shin in my hands and roll around on the sidewalk, moaning in pain until someone called an ambulance. i could take off at a dead sprint, and run down foothill in agony, shedding big tears and contorting my face into a grimace that shouted both calamity and courage. of course, i was only allowed to do this because it was raining. drama dies when it's dry.

anyway. i did none of the above. i just walked, and evaluated the pain with each step. where was it coming from? what made it worse? what made it better? i walked backwards. i walked sideways. i walked with my left leg locked. i walked like raggedy ann. i walked normal. repeat. i had five good miles to walk and to think. where do i go from here? do i take another week off? do i have to change my race plans now? is 2011 going to be a total loss? will my brain explode if i can't run des news? (yes). is james actually going to catch me? (no, but close).

i also thought about my poor attitude. i attended graduation yesterday for my students who will be graduating at the end of spring term. the speaker was mike schlappi, a motivational speaker from draper who had an incredible story to tell and an amazing perspective on life. in a split second, his life changed dramatically (again, see burt). basically, he went from being a star athlete to spending the rest of his life in a wheelchair. he said a lot of great things and i really enjoyed his speech. i thought about that for awhile, and how life could be a lot worse. i thought about all of the other things in my life that i am grateful for -- and how this injury is relatively minor, is temporary, and is insignificant in the large scheme of things (cue burt). even so, i was still having a hard time shaking my frustrations, my bad attitude and my negativity toward this injury. as much as i tried to focus on the positive, i found myself coming back to asking questions and feeling upset. why now? why is my body not allowing me to run? why can i not stay healthy? my thoughts would then circle back to mike and his speech, and the cycle would begin again. eventually i made it back to the field house, a mere 10 minutes before james.

we then lifted weights and did core, and james was very patient in lending his ear and his support as i vented my frustrations. i knew that i needed to change my attitude about the whole thing, but i also needed one more whining session with someone who could relate and respond appropriately.

moving on. another week on the bike. an appointment with a sports medicine doctor. more icing and rest. lots of quality time with my gas stove (cooking is the ultimate stress reliever). after this week, if i still don't have an answer, i may have to rethink my racing plans for the year, and i may have to address the fact that i overuse the comma. as hard as that is to swallow (burt), there are worse things in life (burt).  it's a learning experience. it's a humbling experience. it's a frustrating experience. but hey, it's an experience! which means i'm alive. and i'm grateful for that.

5 miles. sugarhouse loop. dug out some nasty knots yesterday via extreme massage. i don't remember much of what happened, but i know it involved some very strong thumbs and a wrench. my leg is bruised, but it feels oh so much better now -- it is still a bit sore, but nothing like it has been over the past three weeks.  i'm still going to see a doctor just to rule out any other ailments, but i think things are finally starting to turn the corner...

6 miles. five fingers. sugarhouse park. the last time i did this was on october 1, 2010...

"6 miles. 3 loops around sugarhouse park. i ran into james about a 1/2 mile into the run. it was so nice to have the company -- i got out later than usual and was feeling very sluggish and unmotivated at first. i wore my five fingers for the first time in forever since i knew the run would be relatively short and i would have access to plenty of grass."

this was exactly how my run went today, although i ran into james about 2.5 miles into my run. also, we saw walter. also, my shin was very sore today -- hence the vibrams and the grass. i felt good for the first half of the run, but i slowly started to tighten up as we went along. it's manageable though. much better than last friday.

the original plan for this morning was to run the state capitol half marathon in salt lake city, but it turns out the race had to be postponed. james and i still wanted to race today, so we decided to go to american fork and run in the free 10k/5k/mile races. james ran the 10k and i ran the 5k. we both signed up for the mile as well, but i didn't end up running it. more on that later...

the morning was rainy and cold, but the rain let up at race time and the weather ended up being fairly pleasant (other than all of the water/muck flicking that went on in the first 100m of the race).

i was worried about how my shin was going to handle the pounding of the race, but i felt good through the warm-up so i figured everything would be okay. it was only 3 miles, after all.

the course was equipped with a nice hill or two -- nothing too unbearable but it was deifinitely a challenge. splits were 5:48, 6:10 and 5:54. i was breathing way too hard in the second mile, and i never really recovered after that, even though the course had a downward slope after cresting the hill near the cemetery. my leg felt fine throughout the race, but after i finished i stood around in the cold for about 20 minutes instead of continuing to move and stay loose (bad idea). my leg completely locked up and it became difficult to even put weight on it. i was trying my best to avoid a limp-walk, but it was inevitable. i gimped around the rest of the morning, shivering and looking like a fool (but merri saved me with her blankets). i decided that it wouldn't be very sensible to limp through the mile, so i scratched that from the day's agenda. i had been very excited to run it and get a feel for racing such a short distance, but it will have to wait until next year.

i'm not sure what to make of my 5k time today since the course was short, but i feel like it was a good effort after these past four weeks of injury and sporadic training. the question now is whether my leg just needs to loosen up, or if it is broken (maybe not literally broken, but it is definitely malfunctioning right now). the month of may was a black hole as far as training goes. we'll see what june brings -- i have sent in my requests to the government for warmer whether and a healthy shin, but i do understand that it's probably asking too much. tomorrow's run will give me an idea on whether or not training should continue. this sport of running -- what a ride.

it was a lot of fun to meet merri, leandra and melanieB this morning and see a bunch of other familiar faces. 26.2 did a good job of putting on a no-frills race that everyone could enjoy.  i ended up winning a $25 gift certificate to costa vida, which james and i promptly spent after the race.
