"Man is so made that he can only find relaxation from one kind of labor by taking up another."
--Jacques Anatole Thibault/Anatole France,

crazy day today. two finals to start it off. then i had this long phone call with a crazy man who was trying to get feedback from me about his new web program that i am testing with my students. it doesn't work with firefox or safari, and it has all sorts of bugs. so we were trying to get that all figured out and it took up way too much time. next, work. until 11. i am now teaching a night class on thursdays and fridays and it throws everything off. normally i am asleep at that hour.

it will also be nice when all my finals are done (last one is wednesday) because i will have more time and will no longer have to get up at 4am to run before class. i attempted that last night and it did not work. i finally went to sleep at 12:30am and set my alarm for 4am. guess what? i did not wake up. no way. i was too delerious to even turn off my alarm. i fell back to sleep with it on and i could hear it in my dreams. yes, i was that tired. so with the busy day i ended up doing my run after work tonight. i am not silly enough, nor brave enough to run outside at this hour, so i went to the gym. it's nice to run when nobody else is there. i watched some steak cook-off competition on the food network and it was kind of making me queasy. i really don't like treadmills. or steak. i should probably go to sleep now since i have to be up early to race a 5k in utah county. it's a fundraiser for my mom's middle school. in the rain. goodnight.

soggy race. drove down to highland for this one. driving that far for a 5k in this weather would not be worth it to me except for it was a fundraiser for the middle school where my mom teaches. so i got a discounted entry and i got to see my mom and support her school. definitely not the most convenient race to choose on a saturday morning, but worth the time and effort.

super-small race...about 100 registrations and maybe 50 people showed up at the most. wet, muddy, windy. the course was not marked in any way, and my garmin died (of course). so, i just ran. effort-wise it was it was pretty lame. another discouraging time. i just don't have that 5k race speed. i have a goal to go sub-18 this year and i have yet to go sub-19. :-@

5 guys in front of me at the start. slowly picked them off. caught the first place guy at about 2.5, then went in alone. like i said, small race. this wouldn't happen anywhere else. it was kind of fun though.won a new pair of shoes. my mom was a trooper and stood in the pouring rain until i finished. she is the best.

PM: gearing up for another soggy run to get a few more good miles in today.

10 miles today. i have been feeling really tired lately. my eyes always want to close! 2 more days and i will be done will my finals. 2 more weeks and i will be taking a training break. i have too many nagging pains and i need to let everything heal so that i can go strong through my summer races. TOU will be the focus, with DesNews as training. but right now i can't think that far ahead.

the mileage will go way down for a week, possibly two. i need to start focusing on other aspects of my life, and start giving things/people the attention they deserve. i have been way distracted with work, school, and running---performing sub-par at each and neglecting everything else, including health and sleep.

late-morning run today. i got going at a good pace in liberty park toward the end of the run, and i am feeling much more energized than yesterday.

i am quite sure i saw james (fiddy) on 2100 S. near 2000 E. i guess i will have to wait for his blog entry to find out. ???? my thoughts: "ha. he is going faster uphill than i am going downhill" yes, that would be james.

update...

i went out for my run this morning, planning on a 15-miler. i went about 2.5 miles out and felt this strange tightening on the outside and back of my left knee...i guess my hamstring tendon??

so this is the only way i can descrbe it: there wasn't really any pain, just this uncomfortable and sort of eerie feeling that something was about to snap. i could not get my left leg to go into a full stride because it felt like my tendons were a taut rubber band and if i extended my leg too far out in front of me the rubber band would break. but at the same time, there was this "snap back" movement to it...if that makes any sense at all. so i turned around and came home---i don't want to know what would have happened if it snapped ?!?!

it felt tight for about an hour or so after i came home. i stretched it out and iced it for 25 min. then it felt fine. normal. i ran to the grocery store later this evening and it still felt fine.

so my question is...has this happened to anyone before, or do you know what could be the cause?

looks like it's time for a new post in the discussion forum.

tomorrow off...then i will see about it on monday. i fully expect it to be fine, but i am just curious as to what i experienced today because that has never really happened to me before. i think my body is just all nice and damaged (particularly the left leg!) and it is letting me know. well, it must hang on for one more week. ONE MORE WEEK!

today's run will be going in my running hall of fame. and it's not because of mileage. or speed.

there are few runs that ever make it in. in fact, until this morning, the hall of fame was empty...

last night i was driving home from my sister's house when my belt/pulley system went out. the serpentine belt came completly off. apparently this affects the water pump, which in turn overheats the engine and creates an antifreeze spill-over. this means nothing to me. i have no clue what happened, this is just what the "car people" tell me. luckily, it was right by my house so i was able to get home.

so i spent all this time last night figuring out bus routes, trax schedules, towing companies, jeep dealers, etc. so that i could get my car fixed today. the catch is i had to be at work in draper at 8 AM and the trax only goes to sandy. so this morning i ran to the train station on 400 S. and caught the 6 AM train. rode down to sandy where my little sister was kind enough to wake up early and drive from highland to give me a ride to draper. my class gets out at 11, from which i promptly took off hoping to catch the 12:00 train. i ran from 12300 S in draper to state street (large dirt mountain climb from a contruction site included) and then ran along state street to the 10000 south train station and caught the train by a hair. i must mention i was wearing black dress pants and had my backpack with textbooks, work shoes and other junk in it. heavy. and hot. the WORST part was the pants. i DO NOT run in pants. ever. the closest i will go is tights. and even then i am uncomfortable. my intensely horrific claustriphopic pants nightmare became a reality. anyone driving down state street in sandy today surely got a laugh. crazy- backpack-black-pants-messy-hair-girl running down the road at high noon in orange shoes. such drama!

i basically passed out on the train, woke up just in time to change to the university line and get home to meet the tow truck man at 1:00. i actually made it home a little early, so i was going to make something for lunch quick but tow truck man showed up early! so we loaded up my jeep on his giant trailer and he drove me to the dealership. after i was dropped off and took care of the paperwork stuff, i had nowhere else to go so i decided to run home. this was about 3 miles. i was almost home when i ran past the guthrie bike shop on 2100 S. i got this amazing idea that i should finally fork over the money to buy a bike. i have been thinking about doing it forever, but now it made more sense. so it was an impulse buy of sorts, even though at some point this summer i probably would have purchased one. it's a very basic road bike, but it suits my needs...commuting and sunday cross-training. the guys at the bike shop thought i was insane. i ran in all sweaty and said "i want to buy a bike right now and ride it home" i think i disgraced the biking community today with my lack of knowledge, but who cares i am sure they were glad to make a sale.

i rode the last mile home on my new bike, sweating profusely at this point. i made it home just in time to catch a phone call from bob the jeep fixer who said he would have my car done by tomorrow afternoon. i work at 8 AM again, so it looks like i will be having the same adventure tomorrow. but now i have a bike.

 notes:

leg feels fine. i knew it would. it just didn't want to go 15 miles on saturday i guess. :)

marathon week = easy runs, low stress, taper. HA. not today. no more hall of fame adventure runs for the rest of the week. probably taking friday off all together.

i don't have a "crosstraining" box and i am not sure on the running miles equivalent of all my biking today, so it'll just be a zero.

biked to trax at 5:45 am.----trax to sandy----biked from sandy to draper----biked from draper back to the trax in sandy---biked from trax to the jeep dealership---DROVE back to work in my new and improved vehicle----back home at 10 pm.

PM running...? we'll see. long day. not going to push it.

5 miles --- abbreviated sugar house loop. i only made it 4 miles, walked the last one home. my knee/hamstring thing came out of nowhere and i had to pull up mid-stride. massaged it out, stretched. tried to get going again and same thing...so i walked home.

still on for the race.

walked to the trax station. trax to front runner. front runner to ogden. race expo. front runner back to SLC, trax again, walked home. 4 hours round-trip.

1- i have said this before - i hate expos.

this one was the worst because a) i am working late tonight in SLC, so my only option was to make a big trip to ogden and back today. so inconvenient.b) i got there 5 minutes before it officially opened and there were already lines of people EVERYWHERE. c) i couldn't tell if i was at a race expo or a boutique/farmer's market---the booths were selling beads, stitched hand-purses, aroma therapy candles, and triathlon bikes. a frenzy!

2- banana count thus far: 2 1/2 yessssss......

3- shirt rating:  +2 from last year, but -1 because shirt lady was in a bad mood

official diagnosis: ruptured popliteus tendon. basically, this muscle functions as a key to unlocking an extended knee and initiates knee flexion---hence my inability to bend my knee. the injury can be a result of "chronic overuse" in which case it is popliteus tendonitis---this is probably the pain i was experiencing in this area over the past week, and then it just completely gave out yesterday.

and from some online searching:

"Excessive rolling of the feet onto the outside (pronation), as well as running downhill, tends to put excessive stress on this tendon, which can tear it."

i am feeling much better today in all areas---my mind, my emotions and my knee. yesterday i was basically dragging dead-weight with my leg because my knee wouldn't bend. sleeping was also annoying. it was kind of like sleeping with a really bad sunburn. you fall to sleep very carefully in a position that won't disturb anything, then you forget in the night and make an abrupt movement....OUCH. i did that three or four times...restless night.

this morning i could bend it about 20 degrees before i felt any pain; right now it's about 45 degrees, but i have to do it very, very slowly. the only treatment is rest....i can ice it and do light stretches/massage, but it's just like any muslce tear---don't use it until it is healed. the good news is that i can bike...right now that would be too painful, but once swelling/soreness goes down a bit, it should be fine to bike until it has a chance to completely heal. and wouldn't you know it, i have a bike now. it was meant to be.

timeframe: a week completely off. biking for as long as needed (estimate 1 week), then gradually work back in slow, easy running, with NO DOWNHILL for at least 3 weeks. shoot, i can't run sunnyside for awhile.

in sum, it really isn't that serious---which is good. but something more serious would have justified my DNF a bit more. no, i am kidding. it's a good thing, and i am glad it is nothing worse and that it won't be an end to my season...summer running is the best part of the year.

thanks for all of your comments and support.

well, my knee is still quite sore, but the good news is that it likes to bend for me now...at least enough that i can rid myself of my dead-leg zombie walk. which is good, since i had to go into work today. i wanted no evidence of a funny walk because then i would have to either re-tell my dumb story or make up a new and exciting one. i didn't really want to do either, so i did my best to walk like a human. the very first thing i was asked by my students "how was your weekend?" "did you do anything exciting?" HA. i told them it was pretty uneventful but that i enjoyed the weather and ate lots of bananas.

-i got some extra sleep today. ahh. nice!

-i actually finished my business stats assignment in one sitting...without thinking about where i was going to run or when i was going to stop working on the assignment so i could go out for a run. nice!

-i had time to do my full core routine (gingerly on the planks). i did it twice to at least feel like i semi-exercised today.

my new non-running hobbies:

-spending lots of time on FRB---even more than i already do. i am even taking care of the lost sheep with some comments they will never read.

-searching for good thai restaurants online. there are only a few really good ones in SLC. it looks like i am going to have to travel to orlando, seattle or san fransisco to find the rest...seriously i am considering it.

-i finally finished my "marathon makers" book yesterday. maybe there was a reason i didn't read its final pages until now:

" the lure of the marathon is that it can give you a taste of [heroism] within three or four hours - the drama, the suffering, the uncertainty: all can be compressed into the 26 miles 385 yars between the gun and the tape."

"the secret...is to take whatever the race, or life, throws at you and to survive it to the finish. in the marathon, as in almost any endeavour, to endure is to win. to cross the line...is to win - and the only way to lose is by failing to endure."     [ouch] :(

"Johnny Hayes prepared himself well for his marathons. He put in the miles, he knew about pace, he weighed up the opposition and he studied the weather conditions. Dorando relied more on inspiration. He knew that crossing the line in a marathon was an unforgettable emotional experience; that the spirit could keep you going long after your legs give way."

[lesson learned - i can't expect everything to go perfectly just because i think i am prepared. i am not in control and i can't do it alone. that is what i believe but it is something i have lost sight of. humbling experience.]

"They know the marathon gives them the opportunity of fulfilling a dream, to turn themselves into what they believe themselves to be, and that somehow they must endure until they get there."

This comes from the book "The Marathon Makers" by John Bryant. It is a historical account of the first Olympic Marathon, with a focus on three runners representing the US, Italy and Great Britain. A good read if you are into the biographical, non-fiction sort of stuff.

my leg/knee is feeling good. progress at least. it bends without any pain and i am mostly rid of my gimpy walk. the weird issue with it is that it occasionally "locks up" and i get this nerve-pinching sensation. not really painful, just startling and uncomfortable. unsure what to think about it really.  but i am not a doctor, obviously, so i have no idea what it is supposed to be feeling like. maybe i should ask my doctor? :)

i went down to utah county this evening to have dinner with my mom and brother. then i attempted to help my mom fix some sort of weird filter thing on her sprinkling system. we had NO IDEA what we were doing and we both ended up soaked. we didn't fix anything. probably made it worse actually.

tomorrow will be day 5...

today i am getting lots of extra work done. and getting ahead in my stats class. it's not that running ever took up that much of my time....but just those 2+ extra hours a day seems like a gift after always feeling pressed for time. and i have less laundry to do!

i am just trying to focus on my core routine...at least keep up fitness in some area. i am probably going to do some bouldering at the front this afternoon before i go to work. that should give the arm and leg muscles a good wake-up. aerobic-wise---probably i will lose some fitness, but hopefully i can get it back quickly. based on how i feel, i expect i will be able to start running sooner than i thought...we'll see what mr. doc. has to say...

starting to feel irritable. and roly poly.

i did core/weights for 1 hour. exercise---yes. enjoyable---not really. it's the absence of movement that's killing me. you don't get to race skateboarders or be chased by three-legged chiuauas in a weight room.

i think i have finally let the race go. i finally sent my timing chip back to milliseconds. maybe that was the key :)  all week this pit-in-my-stomach feeling has been hanging with me, and i keep having stupid race dreams (lame, i know).  i'm done with all of it. it's one race. there are plenty more in the future. plus, i needed a slap in the face to bring me back into reality.

assuming i am healthy, i have planned my "adventure race" for the year. this will replace the wasatch back since i have to miss it this year for work reasons.

the plan: running with the devil half marathon---website---saw an article about it in runner's world and took interest. it is on june 27th---just about a month out from DesNews. it should be a nice prep for the DesNews course---hilly, hot and highly unpredictable.

the race starts at high noon in the nevada desert, and runs around the lake mead recreation area. it provides all the adventure that i am looking for, is within reasonable driving distance, and will be a cheap stay.

now the trick is to get my bum leg working again. i think i am nearly there...

no memorial day 5K for me today, but i did enjoy a rather empty gym.

1 hour weights/core + 1 hour experimentation with various cardio equipment

result:

treadmill: no - the back of my knee started to feel funny after .5 miles...it feels like there is a "disconnection" of sorts when i extend my leg into a full stride. don't know how else to describe that really...but it feels scary and i don't ever again want to feel what i felt in the race. plus, that would just take me back to square one. so i stopped.

stationary bike: yes - doesn't bother me at all. weird. i wish i understood anatomy more. then i got this brilliant idea: what about running uphill? if i limit my stride to shorter steps at a slow pace, would that work? maybe. and then i would actually be running, even if the pace was slow. back to the treadmill.

i set the treadmill to max. incline (15%) and started running at 5.1 mph (11:45 pace). it worked. i was running mostly on my toes and my stride/form was non-existent, but it didn't bother my knee at all. the trouble was, i was dying! i must have lost more fitness last week than i thought, because honestly, this was harder for me than 800M repeats. i did 5 x 2 min. hard and then went into "rest mode" where i was basically doing a lame shuffle-step. but even with the slow pace and pathetic form, i was running, and my heart was pumping hard.

i went back to the bike to cool-down for 10 min.

jumproping: yes - (thought this might hurt) single-leg hops and double-leg hops both feel fine...but i look really dorky doing it and i am not sure it is actually doing anything. it is fun though! i wanted to break out some double-dutch, but none of the buff guys were interested in spinning the ropes for me.

again, i wish i understood anatomy; there are very specific motions that my leg can and cannot handle. the ones i can handle there is no sign of pain, tightness or injury. and the ones i can't handle...it is very clear that i am injured.so i guess this week will be full of biking and extreme incline treadmill running. and maybe i will join a jump-rope club.

tried the elliptical today - doesn't bother the knee at all and i was able to get in a decent workout.

6 min. segments - 1 min. easy, 2 min. hard (goal was to keep it above 105 rpm), 1 min easy, 2 min. hard - reverse/back-pedal (burning quads and calves!)...then start again with 1 min. easy....etc.

5.5 miles total - counting 3.25 running equivalent (??)

spun out the kinks on the bike for a cool-down

i have to pick up a helmet today so that i can actually go up the canyons on a long ride.

tomorrow i will be back on the treadmill for some mountain climbing

since the elliptical didn't bother my knee yesterday, i thought i would try some slow, easy jogging to see how it would respond. i wore my bulky yuck compression knee brace. i jogged very slowly to the gym (2 miles). my left leg felt so funny. it wasn't even really doing anything. it was acting more like a table leg that would keep me stable and upright while my right foot came off the ground. i was barely extending it forward, and i never let it bend back behind me...so my stride was very off and very funny looking.

i made it to the gym in 19:15  (9:37 pace). everything still felt fine, so i decided to hit the treadmill.

15% incline at 5.1 mph for 20 min. --- holy cow i was wheezing, gasping, and at times hanging on for dear life, but i made it. so hard. so sweaty.

then core/weights---but no jumproping today.

2 miles slow, easy jog home. a little pain in the back of my knee came on right before i got home, so i walked the last block. just being cautious.

bike:

quick 60 min. ride around SLC with quite a few laps around liberty park. i watched all the runners in the park. looks fun. i saw a guy running with a weighted vest. tough. i also saw an extreme dad running with a double stroller...two kids inside AND a bike hanging on the handlebars. there was also a big  fitness group doing a whole bunch of plyometrics and one time i went by they were doing "wall sits" using the tree trunks as their wall. ouch. finally, i saw a whole bunch of school kids on their end-of-year field trips. there was even a group of 14 little kids all tied together on one single leash. simpler times...

i only had one near-crash today. i had to slow down for this car that was going super-slow through the park...too narrow to go around him. i was following him forever, and just before the outlet, he came to a complete stop and waved for me to go ahead. it was a very narrow space and the path open to me just happened to be cluttered in thousands of pine cones/needles. nice. i had slowed down so much that i started to wobble and almost fell. to catch my fall i just started pedaling right through all the debris. poor bike. the car had an AZ license plate...at first i thought it was bonnie or burt pulling a prank on me.

the last part of my ride i left the park and followed the DesNews course backwards from the finish line, just for a bit. hopefully i will be running on that course in two months...

my brother is graduating from HS tonight. cool.

bike:  long tour of SLC in the heat. put more effort into the ride today.

 sunburn.

note: bug in the eye while running = annoying...bug in the eye at bike speed = a much more uncomfortable impact to the eyeball.

probability of getting a bug in your eye in liberty park: 100%---every 4 minutes.

cleared to run tomorrow.

although i cheated and tried to run last week (didn't work too well), i think all the cross-training and extra rest has helped a ton. everything feels normal. i guess i will find out tomorrow...
