5 miles around sugarhouse. my original plan was to run on the wood chips at liberty park, but it was all closed off for construction. they have removed all of the wood chips on the east side, and they were replacing it with what looks to be a branch/extension to the new trolley line. hopefully they aren't getting rid of the entire trail -- i need that soft surface! the park is a mess right now -- looks very similar to the days of the oil spill. most of the east side is taped off.

4 miles. liberty park. a lot of things seem to be holding me back right now. the good news is that i am running striders half on saturday. i'm going into it with a solid four week taper, including 10 days completely off and the bulk of my mileage in the 4-6 mile range. only two 10-milers since the woodlands. no workouts. i'll probably PR.

this result is about what i expected. i crashed hard at the end -- it was all in the legs. the course starts rolling around mile 8 and it exposed all of my weaknesses. i was passed by two women in the final three miles, and that was tough since i was already feeling weak and dejected. great weather though! 

james and i ran another race in the afternoon -- the salt lake city challenge urban scavenger race. we had to run around downtown with 12 clues about different sites/events and take pictures next to each one. they were giving out $300 for first place, and we thought we might have a shot at it since we are familiar with both salt lake city and running.

we ended up taking third, but their scoring system was much too chaotic and arbitrary to really know for sure (maybe 4th? maybe 118th?). it's a fun concept, but logistically it was kind of a mess. 225 teams/1000+ people (in costume!) and everyone was frantic.

track workout at brighton high with devra and tee. 2 x 2 miles. 

this was a poor decision.

it was raining. and sometimes hailing.

the track was covered in water. 

i had to wring out my shorts before we even started the workout.

i stayed with devra and tee for the first 200 meters, and then spent 7.5 laps running on my own. i was probably crying, but i don't remember.

i was losing 3-4 seconds per lap, and devra and tee were quickly pulling away.

i finished in 12:36, a solid 200+ meters behind.

at this point i realized (no, i had already realized) that i was being really stupid and i was probably going to hurt myself, so i decided to only run one more hard mile. i jogged around while devra and tee ran their first mile, and then jumped in and found myself fading back again. i finished that mile in 6:03. 

march was a low and slow month of training for me, and a lot of that was on purpose. i did not think that my fitness would deteriorate so dramatically.  

mostly i'm just mad it was raining because it ruined my fancy monday hair.

yesterday's workout didn't help me at all, and i was marathon sore today. so i took the day off, which isn't helping my fitness or my confidence. i'm panicking about slc half, but a day off to fix my issues is probably better than an injury, which i feel is coming if i'm not careful.

i did some cross training - walked around, arm weights, dead bugs, one-legged bridging, made soup, push ups, went to the mailbox, etc.

i am just lingering, lingering, lingering in a post-marathon funk. it's been six weeks now...

11 miles with devra. riverton square loop. pace was slower than normal, which was good. my legs were still pretty tight for the first few miles, but they loosened up throughout the run.

pm - 4 miles. i helped rob and carina mark a 5k course for the traverse mountain elementary 5k. the entire school participated -- 899 students. what a task! it was mind-boggling to see that many kids charging down the sidewalks, but it was so cute and so entertaining. they were all pushing themselves so hard and it was pretty amazing to see what they were capable of -- some of these kids were tiny! the best moment was when one little girl crossed the line and then turned around and waved her friend in that was about 100 meters back. as soon as her friend reached the line, the girl gave her a dandelion and a hug. cutest thing ever.

i wanted to see how everything felt today before making a decision about slc half next weekend. i was expressing my concerns to james via a dramatic reading of my blog, and he said that if my concerns are actually about injury and not just about running poorly, then i shouldn't run. otherwise i should throw myself into the fire and stop caring so much about the result. 

so i'm going to run.

  • i started off a bit fast -- i was running in a pack with devra, tee, kassi, emily, and rachelle, and i wanted to stay with them as long as i could (it was go out hard or run alone). i knew i was pressing the pace too much, but this course is forgiving, so i went with it. i stayed with the group through sugarhouse park, and then i dropped back on 1700 east (mile 6). 
  • i felt stronger today, and my legs and pace held up much better than they did at striders two weeks ago (but that is mostly because the slc course is easier -- especially the second half).
  • the new and improved finish at liberty park was awesome. 
  • i'm on a roll with 4th place finishes this year.

pm - 3 miles around sugarhouse park. i joined devra and tee for their warm up, but i did not join them for their track workout. i make a great training partner. "off to the track, eh?...well, it's been fun. bye." 

i don't have big racing plans until des news, so i want to stay in this "down time" phase and keep it really easy for a few more weeks. devra and tee will be tapering/racing/recovering soon enough, so hopefully that will help me feel less slackerish :) those two are on fire right now. i'm very excited to see their results at ogden.

7 miles with devra around dimple dell. 

i took two days off after an aborted run on tuesday. all signs point to pes anserine bursitis, which is a pretty easy fix. it could potentially drag on for weeks if i don't stop now, and i would rather lose a few days and run healthy than putter around and risk overcompensation injuries. not interested. 

as i said on monday, i don't have big plans for a bit, but i need to be fully healthy for when i do have plans (june - september). i have been cycling through these little nagging injuries for nearly two months -- i get rid of one thing, do something stupid (track workout, racing, scavenger hunts, rolling down the stairs to scare james, etc), and then hurt something else. i need to take advantage of this "open" time to get back to 100%, otherwise i'll be regretting it later when i no longer have the luxury of randomly taking days off and only running 20 miles per week. 

so ANYWAY. i felt fine this morning. i have an obligation to fulfill tomorrow that will require me to run a 5k, but i don't think i will do any damage, especially if i keep it easy and eat a bunch of girl scout cookies in the process.

i was mrs. thin mint in the 5k, which meant i had to wear a cookie costume. it wasn't constricting in any way, but it was very hot. i wanted to rip it off at the turnaround point, but then the wind changed on the way back and the costume got all breezy. there was a woman standing on a corner holding a sign that said: "if you think this is tough, try growing bangs." 

the girl scouts do a great job with this race. we always have fun.

10 miles with james. sugarhouse loop. we both won a pair of skechers goRun shoes at a race a few weeks ago, and they arrived yesterday. so we used this run to test them out. the shoes are very light and squishy. and colorful.

beautiful trail run in corner canyon. see neasts' blog for a description of where we went -- i have no idea but it was all very pretty and peaceful. 

this was an excellent run. 99.9% of my running is done on the roads, and every time i get a rare trail run in, i am perplexed as to why i don't do it more often. there are endless options, and corner canyon is just 10 minutes from my work. hopefully i can get up there a bit more during the summer months.
