my friend deena was in town today. it was fun to have someone to run with through all the miles, and even more fun to catch up with an old friend. we chatted about our past races and she gave me some insights about her training methods and what she has found to be successful. i even got to look at her medal from athens, although she wouldn't let me touch it. 22 miles. average pace 5:20.

**********************************************************

so really, the morning didn't start out all that great. i woke up to tons and TONS of snow AND the power was out. no fooling. i had a bunch of work to get done, but since my internet was useless i had to venture out into the snow to hastings cafe. worked all morning then went to class. by 4 PM it was clear out and everything was melting, so i headed out on my run.

ran up mountain road to dry canyon. i was trying to avoid the slush, but it became impossible so instead i embraced it and enjoyed lots of sliding/splashing around. it was kind of fun. hit a bit of a chilly headwind on the way back down, but overall it was a pleasant afternoon. i only got hit by two snow clumps melting off of the trees. not too bad.

hip is ok. only complained a bit on the downhills. i still walk funny though.

8 miles. 7:40 pace.

i pushed back my planned BW a day or two to ensure the hip would be able to endure it. i actually felt really good today, so i think i will go for it tomorrow or wednesday.

less than 4 weeks to race day:

2 more BWs - one this week and one next week

1 more 20-miler with a 5 mile tempo (friday april 16th)

1 5K race (saturday april 24th)

1 week taper (race on may 2nd)

only 1 20-miler in 4 weeks is a bit conservative, but i figure the BWs will be 16-17 miles and that should be sufficient. hopefully...

"old captains and brand new cruise ships" --- i got new shoes yesterday. nike free 5.0 and another pair of brooks launch.

i was planning on only getting the launch, but i have also been thinking about the free. when the shoe lady opened the box i said: "yeek! those are really pink."  but i tried them on and they felt like they were made for my foot. and the pink grew on me. and i sort of needed two new pairs since all the shoes in my rotation are long past retirement. and i got a really, really good deal on the shoes. so i bought them.

i couldn't wait to get out and test the frees this morning. ran my usual north logan/elk ridge park 10-mile loop. i loved how they felt, but i am still unsure about wearing them in the marathon. i will test them on my 20-miler next friday to make the final decision. i always have the launch as a back-up.

10 miles up mtn. road to dry canyon  and onto the bonneville shoreline trail. a warm 45 degrees this morning. very nice. i wore my new pair of brooks launch. such a wonderful shoe.

what is the distance from dry canyon to the next "outlet" on the bst? and where do you end up? i turned around at 5 miles so i didn't make it far enough to find out. would be nice to know for a longer run, though.

4:32 am - it was hard to get going this morning. my alarm went off at 4 and it took me 32 minutes just to get out the door. i was dragging.

it took me about two miles to get out of zombie mode. the good thing was that it felt really nice out. 36 degrees, wet, but not raining anymore. air was fresh. ran 3 giant loops around campus. just me and the worms.

my last 20-miler. it was scheduled for friday, but i suddenly have way too much going on that day. plus it is my commute day which always brings added stress. so, today was the day.

i ran 1 mile from my house to the TOU finish line, then followed the course out to hollow road (mile 16.5-ish). then i turned around and followed the course back to the finish line. most of the orange moose on the road have faded or completely disappeared, but it was fun looking for them.

i am disappointed in myself for one thing about this run --- i did not do my 5-mile MP tempo. i really needed to get a feel for pace and test my fitness, but i couldn't get it going. i did run a good 4 mile stretch with some faster miles ranging from 6:38 - 7:10, but i didn't push it as hard as i could have. i mostly just wanted to get through the distance today. i will worry about sharpening my speed with my final BW and 5K race.

 total time: 2:35:22 / 7:46 average

i wore my nike frees. no problems. still love them. they are now my official eugene race shoes.

then i half-heartedly worked on a paper while watching the boston marathon. what a great race. congrats to all the bloggers who ran so well today.

after that, i tried to get serious on the paper writing, but it was a SERIOUS mess (more on that later).

finally around 1:30 pm i headed out on my run. 72 degrees with pure sun.  just the way i like it.

i ran up mountain road to dry canyon and then onto the BST trail. the trail has some good rolling hills on it, and i really tried to surge up all the hills and keep a good pace going overall.  i turned around at 5 miles and headed back down mountain road, really pushing the pace to the end of the run.

now let me explain why this paper is so frustrating:

i am on a team of five and we are writing a paper that will end up being 250+ pages in length. each person is writing roughly 50 pages of the document, and then we are combining them into one (bad idea, i know). so i was given the job of "master editor" meaning everyone sends me their portion of the paper and i get the fun job of editing it. the obvious problem with this is that the paper is horribly choppy, as it contains five different voices, five different writing styles, five different formats, etc, etc, etc. and there is NO consistency in tense. right now it is a paper nightmare. i suspect there is at least 25-30 more hours of work to do on it, and the deadline is on friday. oh dear i am stressed...

oh, and one final note from the trail: about 1/4 from the trailhead (on my way back out) i passed a lady with her two dogs. she warned me about the "fresh dog poop" just ahead on the trail and assured me that it did not belong to her. i think she was getting technical on me, because TECHNICALLY it didn't belong to her. but i am 99% sure it belonged to one of her two dogs. why? a) it wasn't there when i entered the trail; b) it was mighty fresh; and c) i had not passed anyone else on the trail the entire time.  hmmm....

commute. week 15. my car is about to retire.

apparently my taper started early. i have had zero time this week and i sort of lost focus on training while trying to get all of my final projects done. when it comes right down to it, school trumps running.

i had planned for a 1 week taper and was supposed to get in one more BW and a 5K race this week. the BW didn't happen, and i hope i will be okay without it.  i absolutely did not have the energy this week. as for the 5K...that's tomorrow but i won't be racing. i am just going to run it with some friends and maybe add in a little speed if i get the itch. overall i am pretty disappointed in how this week ended up. it's not good for me mentally, as i don't feel as prepared as i would like.

mental note: do not plan on running a marathon during finals week. it causes nothing but stress.

3 miles. that's it. i ran a 5K and my hip complained.

the race was called the second chance 5K for organ donation and it was organized by one of my classmates, forrest, who is currently waiting for a liver donor. ironically, he was life-flighted to SLC on wendesday with a serious blood infection. upon hearing the news, a bunch of people from my program decided to run to support him. it was fun to run with friends and enjoy the morning. the course was tough---started at romney stadium and went striaght uphill to campus for the first mile. the end of the second mile ran right through the middle of a sidewalk sale in front of aggie village. it was an absolute circus. i dodged a lady with a walker and ran into a double stroller in the proecss. it was comical. the runners were angry at the shoppers for not moving off the sidewalk, and the shoppers were angry at the runners for disrupting their junk browsing.

it would have been great to push the pace and test my fitness, but at the same time it would have produced a slow time and only caused frustration. since TOU last september, i have yet to actually race in a race i had planned to race. does that make sense? i seem to come up with unexplained aches and pains that tell me not to run. maybe it's all in my head and it's just race anxiety?  i better get it together. although i'm not sure how. frustrated.

i wore some mighty uncomfortable heels to my graduation banquet last night and my feet were quite sore afterward, especially the tops of my toes. bad idea!

so...today's run was just a test to make sure everything was in order and ensure that my feet/toes were happy. felt great. ready to go.

commute week 16. since i have to work tonight i will be flying out super early tomorrow morning. i have to drive over two hours to get to eugene, so tomorrow will be a long day with no running. today was it.

forecast is looking great:
