8 miles. i stepped on a santa pez dispenser on the road and cracked his face. i guess that is my official way of ending the holiday season and bringing in the new year.

one more 8-miler to finish off the week. i thought a consistent string of easy 8 mile runs would be a good way to bring back the mileage in a gentle fashion without aggravating my leg or sending the rest of my body into shock. i have only been averaging 20-30 mpw since the beginning of november, so going up to 48 was a big step. but my leg still works and i am not dead, so i guess the 8-mile-a-day monotony worked. two more weeks of easy base to get back up to 60 mpw, then it's time to start throwing in some workouts and long runs.

8 miles super early. -10F out. so i ran inside. averaged 7:45/mile.

PM: commute day 2 - survived. fixed my tail light in the process. it's all UHAUL's fault.

look how many ways KSL found to describe "polluted air"

i am looking forward to the various conditions over the next 5 days.

evening run. very, very cold. wearing lots of clothes. tired after a long day of work. ran very slow but made it out alive. averaged 8:50 pace for the run.

i officially canceled my trip to arizona to run the RnR half marathon. i am just not ready, and i can't justify spending the money right now. my plane ticket was non-refundable, but it WAS transferable. so i just switched my flight to go to eugene in may. hopefully i am ready by then.

race dream last night. haven't had one of those for awhile:

i was running the SLC marathon, and somehow got stuck carrying my clothes bag and an extra large water bottle the entire way. i kept looking at my watch to see where i was at in the race, but the numbers would never make sense (877:46, 6:70, etc). at 2 miles to go i got lost, so i ran to my old apartment in SLC and looked up the course map online. i was thinking about how embarrassed i was going to be when i had to explain in my race report that i lost 5 minutes of time to stop and look at a map. i finally found my way toward the finish but never made it there before waking up.

4:45 AM - tuesdays will start early since i have yet another 7:30 class this semester. i must say though, i am very happy to be starting school again. my break was too long. i am looking forward to having a more structured and productive schedule.

9 miles. overall 8 min pace for the run. sped up to 7 min pace for the last 20 minutes, including the last mile at 6:40. felt better/more energized today than i have felt for about two weeks.  possibly diet related. still experimenting.

12 miles. averaged 7:35/mile for the first 10, then slowed way down and dawdled through the last 2 to cool down. 8:03 average for the entire run.

the last time i ran 12 miles was the day my shin fell into the depths of injury. no pain to speak of after this run. good.

i got a late start this morning due to my very late night last night trying to get home from slc. this consisted of riding three different trains, a bus, and then navigating my way through an ultra foggy sardine canyon. i was sure i was going to fall off a cliff or hit a deer. that canyon is always scary in the dark, but the fog element made it extra spooky.

goal for this week was 55 miles. i ended up doing 55.5 just to humor sam. right now my only goals are consistency, base mileage, and rebuilding fitness. i am not doing any speed or long runs. but i do wonder if my lack of long runs is in error. it seems most bloggers do a weekly long run year-round. thoughts? advice? i am 15 weeks out from my next marathon and i don't want to be dealing with injuries...

this is not a painters race report. 10 miles easy.

q: how long does it take to drive 96 miles @ 30 MPH in a blizzard?

a: 3.5 hours

q: so what time would a 3.5 commute bring you home at?

a: 12:57 AM

q: so how motivated does that make you to get up early and run in the snow that nearly killed you last night?

a: zero.

q: so how do you handle it?

a: sleep in and run on the treadmill.

AM - 8 miles @ 7:45 pace. campus/north logan loop

PM - 4 miles easy. going to start doubles twice a week.

i read an article on the winter blues, and i thought this was crazy:

average light intensity of office lighting: 200-500 lux

light intensity on a bright summer day: up to 100,000 lux

the lack of sunlight/darker days increases melatonin levels (influences mood). light increases concentration of serotonin in the brain (improves mood).

no wonder we get spring fever. just a couple more months...

a few words of wisdom i received in an email from my grandma last night:

"Be careful and be smart with your running.  Remember, cars are much, much bigger than you and often not nice!"

 good advice.

courtesy of the postal service:

"I wanted to [run] through the empty streets
And feel something constant under my feet,
But all the news reports recommended that I stay indoors
Because the air outside will make
Our cells divide at an alarming rate
Until our shells simply cannot hold
All our insides in,
And that's when we'll explode
(And it won't be a pretty sight)"
