marathon #31 / des news #9

this was my first marathon since TOU 2014 --it's been awhile.

i'm happy with the outcome, as my ultimate goal was to finish [still alive] [still running] and [feeling reasonably strong]. i started out extremely conservatively in hopes of preventing a blow up. maybe i took it too easy over some of those early miles, but i think in doing so i gave myself the best chance of finishing the way i did. i really had no idea how i would respond to the downhill/altitude mix, and i kept telling myself that too slow would very likely produce a better result than too fast. it's always a weird balance with this race, and i was not adequately prepared for anything risky. :)

i became aware of my position (3rd) at the out and back portion, and both women had a good lead on me. i had been running low to mid-7:00 miles up to that point, and that's when i decided i should speed it up a bit to see if i could catch one or both of them. i've seen so many blow ups in this race, from both myself and others, so i knew that if i stayed patient there was a chance i could move up.

i was on the hunt from miles 10-20 -- i was slowly gaining on second place all along wasatch and foothill, and i finally caught and passed her between 20 and 21. first place (tara lewis) was about 5-6 min ahead. i think i might have cut that down a bit on foothill, but i was never really close to catching her. she stayed strong and finished in 3:00.

i'm glad i did this. i haven't felt like myself (as a runner) for a loooong time, and today i felt like i at least somewhat reconnected with the part of me that is actually motivated to race and push myself through a marathon. i may never get back to running the kind of times i used to, but today's little stab felt good and i want to keep trying. i took the advice that sasha gave me the other day -- that i should find some sort of fulfillment in the race regardless of the outcome. i think it went about as well as i could have hoped/expected, and i enjoyed myself the entire time. it was a nice ending to our very long utah vacation. i'm so happy that i got to see so many old friends, spend adequate time with my family, and have a bunch of really cool mountain adventures. i miss this place a lot, but i leave feeling content that i got everything i could out of the past three weeks.

thanks to amiee, devra, and tee for the bike cheers and encouragement today. thanks to james for the traffic control (he stood in front of TRAX for me lol lol). and thanks to andrea and jake (y'all know them!) for being our main mountain guides, running partners, adventure enthusiasts, waterslide friends, and house hosts.

at the airport now. SLC -->ATL

yuck!
